Question about 1997 Hyundai Accent

Excessive CO2 emissions. New plugs, plug wires, and catalytic converter. Put on diagnostic computor and all systems adjusted to specs. Still will not pass air care. What else needs to be looked at?

You wasted tons of money of a throw away vehicle all you needed to do is a full tune-up w/filter change an new oxygen sensors. They determin the air/fuel mixture along with intake air temp sensor and engine coolant temp sensor not the cat

What would cause engine light flashing


Probably Engine Management System has recognized a fault or a part operating out of tolerance. Sometimes will self-rectify!
top things to check:
  • O2 sensor (part of the emissions system, monitoring and helping adjust the air-fuel mixture)
  • Loose gas cap
  • Catalytic converter
  • Mass air flow sensor (monitoring the amount of air mixed in the fuel injection system)
  • Spark plug wires

My truck runs excellent but the hc on emissions is 100 points too high. I changed plugs, wires, distributer cap, and rotary button. changed egr valve and pcv valve and oil. the catalytic converter is less...


bad sensors. leaks in your vacuum system (put the dipstick down all the way, even the gas cap is part of the vacuum system), did you gap the spark plugs to what your vehicle requires?

its your catalytic converter (colloquially, "cat" or "catcon") is a vehicle emissions control device which converts toxic byproducts of combustion in the exhaust of an internal combustion engine to less toxic substances by way of catalysed chemical reactions. The specific reactions vary with the type of catalyst installed. Most present-day vehicles that run on gasoline are fitted with a "three way" converter, so named because it converts the three main pollutants in automobile exhaust: an oxidizing reaction converts carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) to CO2 and water vapour, and a reduction reaction converts oxides of nitrogen (NOx) to produce CO2, nitrogen (N2), and water (H2O).[1] The first widespread introduction of catalytic converters was in the United States market, where 1975 model year gasoline-powered automobiles were so equipped to comply with tightening U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations on automobile exhaust emissions.[2][3][4][5] These were "two-way" converters which combined carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). Two-way catalytic converters of this type are now considered obsolete, having been supplanted except on lean burn engines[citation needed] by "three-way" converters which also reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx).[2]
Catalytic converters are still most commonly used in exhaust systems in automobiles, but are also used on generator sets, forklifts, mining equipment, trucks, buses, locomotives, motorcycles, airplanes and other engine-fitted devices. They are also used on some wood stoves to control emissions.[6] This is usually in response to government regulation, either through direct environmental regulation or through health and safety regulations.
Catalytic oxidization is also used, but for the purpose of safe, flameless generation of heat rather than destruction of pollutants, in catalytic heaters.

Do a system test with a diagnostic scan tool and check for any trouble codes> Do a compression test> Check valve timing make sure that when #1 cylinder is firing the piston is at TDC.> Chech for vacuum leaks > check for exaust back pressure (plugged catalytic converter)>good luck

Here is some info for you to read, besides me explaining what ppm is, i also gave you some info of how to solve this, Ain't that special LOL. Mike

Overall Result: PASS or FAIL. A vehicle with a properly operating engine and catalytic converter will have very low HC and CO readings. However as a vehicle ages the HC and CO emissions will increase and may become erratic. As a vehicle ages it becomes increasingly important to be sure that the engine and converter are fully warmed up before the test to have the best chance of passing the test.

HC (PPM): The parts per million of hydrocarbons (unburned or partially burnt gasoline) in the exhaust.

CO (%): The percentage of the exhaust that is carbon monoxide (CO).

CO +CO2 (%): Complete combustion in the engine or catalytic converter will result in very little carbon monoxide (CO) and a high percentage (up to about 16%) of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the exhaust.

O2 (%): When there is complete combustion in the engine or catalytic converter there is a very little oxygen (O2) in the exhaust. Usually less than one percent. A higher reading indicates a problem with the engine, the exhaust system, the sampling system or the catalytic converter. Vehicles do not pass or fail because of the O2 reading; it is only diagnostic information.

RPM: The engine speed in revolutions per minute (RPM) or N/A.

Cruise Limit: The maximum allowable HC and CO emissions at 2500 rpm. The CO+CO2 (%) must equal or exceed 6. This verifies an adequate sample of the exhaust has been obtained. N/A for O2 and RPM.

Cruise Emissions: The emission readings measured at 2500 rpm.

Cruise Result: PASS, FAIL or N/A.

Idle Limit: The maximum allowable HC or CO emissions at idle. The CO+ CO2 (%) must equal or exceed 6. This verifies an adequate sample of the exhaust has been obtained. N/A for O2 and RPM.



These are the possible problems:

bad o2 sensor
bad EGR valve
bad cat
bad timing
dirty injectors
bad plugs or wires
the less costly fixes include replacement of the o2 sensor and EGR valve i would not clean the EGR I would buy a new one there are very cheap you can pick these up at any local parts store .
also run some injector cleaner through your car at least a full tank of gas and one bottle of injector cleaner should be ran through.
you can also have your timing checked for a relatively low price.
and when you go into to have the vehicle checked make sure the car is been running because your cat convertor has to be warm in order to preform at it peak so do not do it when the car is cold.
all of the above are pretty reasonable fixes the general rule of thumb when you work on your own vehicle is start with the cheapest fix first then go on to the next.

Check engine light with low emission code for catalytic converter


Check the fuel pump pressure. should be between 60 to 66 psi. There isn't an easy answer for this one. You may need to perform component testing and a diagnostic check.

Check engine light due to Catalytic converter


Without knowing the specific code, I will assume it relates to an inefficient catalytic converter. At this mileage it could very well mean that the catalytic converter is failing to do it's job and needs to be replaced. The computer sets this code when it sees a signal from the rear O2 sensor start to change in time with the front O2 sensor. It should not. If the cat is working, The rear O2 sensor should have a stable output as the cat is supposed to be removing all the oxygen from the exhaust. Sometimes this code will set if the spark plugs or the engine's state of tune has deteriorated and is producing more emission than the cat can handle, the rear O2 sees the overflow and assumes the cat is bad.
At your present mileage, I would strongly suggest changing the spark plugs if they have not been done in the last 20,000 mi. Have the light reset and drive it to see if the code returns. If it does, replace the catalytic converter. I suspect that you do need a cat, but I view the spark plugs as maintenance, and I wouldn't want to put a brand new cat in without the assurance that my old plugs were not going to damage the new one.

Co emissions high on 206 auto 37000 miles only


no. try driving around for 5 to 10 minutes to warm up the catalytic converter. the catalytic converter is what converts the CO, CO2, and NOx emissions into water vapor, however, it doesn't work unless it's hot, around 1000 degrees F. it is heated be the flow of hot exhaust around it, so you need to drive for a while to heat it up.

I took my truck to emissions and the carbon minoxide is at 125 and the limit is 25. What would cause such a deadly emission so high over the limit?


excessive carbon monoxide is usually the result of very rich mixtures. Here are some causes for rich mixtures:
1. leaking fuel injector(s)
2. excessive fuel pressure at the injectors.
3. ruptured fuel pressure regulator diaphragm
4. crankcase fuel contamination (from leaking injectors)
5. plugged PCV valve or hose
6. closed loop control system incorrectly shifted rich (bad O2 sensor)
7. false input signal to ECM due to bad sensor(s).
