Question about 2001 Plymouth Neon

Car overheats, thermostat was replaced, radiator has flow, cap was replaced however if the cap is left off the car cools down what have we missed??

Do you see constantly bubbling..if so then might have blown head gasket forcing air into the cooling system...also make sure the electric cooling fan is comming on

My 2002 buick century overheats and has no heat


Possible trapped in system. Bleed system, should have two small screw bleeders, one in front of left valve cover on pipe behind water pump and the other on coolant pipe outlet as you follow upper rad. hose towards engine. Engine cool, remove rad cap, open both bleed screws and fill rad until coolant flows free out both bleed ports. close both bleed screws, rad cap off, start engine and let idle until upper hose is hot to touch , shut off, let it cool down for 20 minutes, top up rad and install cap. restart car ,drive and check.

I drive a 1990 celica 185 gt4, it had an issue with blown head gasket ( pushing the water/coolent out expansion tank) got gasket done. head plained etc. i got car back from garage with head gasket done and...


im guessing that maybe your thermostat is sticking. im not sure what else would make your coolant rush out like that. if im right, then that would definitely make your car overheat at speed, but not at idle. that isassuming that the thermostat is at least partially open. if that doesnt fix the overheating, then u may want to consider checking the ignition timing for being too far advanced, or even the camshaft timing.

1996 mazda 626 overheats after shur off and sometimes driving. no smoke


sounds like a restricted radiator.. the thermostat has 2 x jobs to maintain the temperature and to restrict the flow-so by removing the thermostat you actually went backwards- meaning the coolant will flow to fast thru the radiator and will not have time to be cooled down prior to returning to the engine block. since your heater helps to cool it down my guess(educated) would be a restricted radiator..

My car (2003 Malibu) is overheating. The thermostat, water pump, and radiator cap has been replaced, yet it continues to overheat. What would you recommend be done next?


Check for blown head gaskets. GM aluminum-head engines are VERY UNFORGIVING when it comes to being overheated. The heads usually warp, resulting in blown head gaskets and repeated overheating like you are describing. One of the main symptoms will be that you fill the cooling system and open the bleader screws to get the air out of the system. Then you start the engine and run it until the cooling fan comes on. When the fan comes on, place your hand behind the cooling fan and see if the air coming through the radiator is HOT. If it is blowing cool air, the coolant is not flowing through the radiator like it should. This is usually caused by high pressure in the cooling system due to combustion gasses getting in.

Car is still over heating, have replaced heat sensor switch,fuel sensor switch,fuel air sensor and flushed the radiator.


Have you changed out the thermostat and checked for exhaust blow by from a head gasket leak? One quick way to check for blow by would be if you start the car with the cap off on the radiator and see if antifreeze begins to rise up in the radiator before the engine warms up. Exhaust leaking into the water jacket will bubble up through the radiator. This hot exhaust gas will cause you to overheat. A stuck thermostat will keep the antifreeze from ever reaching the radiator to cool down also causing you to overheat.

Overheating engine


You have gone through a lot of trouble so far replacing parts. I wouldn't rely on rad additives for a fix sometimes they do more harm than good. You could just have an air lock in the coolant system. Did you try running the vehicle without the rad cap for awhile to release any air locks that may have occurred? Have you tried a new rad cap? Hopefully this advise helps you some what.

If car heats up quickly and overheats , the problem is the thermostat. The thermostat stays closed and traps coolant in the engine untill it reaches about 185 degrees , than the thermostat opens and allows coolant to flow to the radiator where it is cooled by airflow. ( airflow while driving is usually sufficient ) while idling , or in slow trafic , the fan keeps air moving through the rad. The heater core is strictly for heat in the winter inside the car. The thermostat is the most likely cause of the problem , and even if it was good before , the overheat / boil situation likely cooked it anyways. I am assuming the water pump is still getting turned by a belt. No water circulation by pump would cause same symptom as bad thermostat. Overflow and expansion bottles are designed several different ways on different cars , but the theory is that as the engine heats up and the coolant expands , it goes to the tank. Later , as engine cools down after being shut off , coolant contracts. Radiator is replenished by coolant returning from expansion bottle.

your fan is the problem...it's not turning fast enough to cool the engine off. I need more info on what type of fan you have....elec fan or a clutch fan?

1990 Subaru Liberty Overheats


Hi,

I had the same problem with my 1993 Liberty LX. Remove the thermostat (located inside bottom radiator hose engine connection - take the connection off and thermostat is inside). Reassemble (minus thermostat), reconnect bottom hose. Slowly (very, very slowly) refill the radiator and remove the bleed plug ( located beside the top hose connection to the radiator - a black square plug with a phillips head cross in the middle). When the radiator is full and clear water (no air bubbles) is coming out of the bleed point, replace the bleed plug and then the radiator cap.

Run the engine for five minutes (approx) or until normal engine temperature is reached. Allow the engine to cool down and recheck the water level - fill if necessary ensuring that the bleed plug is open and clear water is coming out of that point. Replace Bleed plug and then radiator cap. Run engine for five minutes (approx) and then test dive. If the engine overheats keep filling the radiator until there are no air bubbles coming from out of the bleed point.

This fixed my overheating problem. Good luck and safe motoring.
