Jaguar s type transmission problems

My mother has a s-type 2001 w/ 39k. 1 year ago she took it in because the shifter was stuck and wouldnt move out of Park. Now, 7 days out of warranty-it is banging loud-and she is advised that the transmission is gone! $4,000.00 to fix. She had it in a few months ago and they put it up on the lift and did not hear the noise. They told her out of warranty-out of luck. I feel she has some recourse. It is and has been a problem-they told her if she considers a new Jag, then maybe that will help her cause! This came from Jaguar Corp. Help! Opinions?

    Please keep on appealing to the owner of the dealership, Jaguar, Ford,they may cave. Let them know Mom is on a fixed income. It would be best if you had Jag dealer do all maint. or had records.Maybe they will give 50% off.
    Shop around for a fix - I have had 2 cars -Dodge van and Infiniti Q45 with trans gone and dealer both times charged almost twice as much to fix than a private shop-about 5 large v 2000-2500

SOLUTION for x-type Transmission fault error
I had this very same problem. My 02 x-type would get transmission fault code and then shut down into limp mode. If I turned the key off, shifted gears a few times and waited I could start up again and sometimes drive for several miles before the code came back. GOOD NEWS, I thought maybe the vechicle was overheating the tranny or something like that and then after it cooled down I could drive some more. I discovered that my gas station had switched to the 10% ethanol addative about the same time I started experiencing "strange" mechanical issues. I decided to try switching my gas to the non-ethanol gas from a Phillips 66 station that advertised 100% REAL GAS. The problems mysteriously dissappeared!!!! Remember that you MUST use PREIUM gas as per the MFR. Well the 02 3.0 can't handle the 10%ethenol in it's gas. Something else you can try if you can't find REAL GAS is to use the OCTANE boost from your local auto parts store. Pay close attention to which brand you buy since some can harm your fule system. As a side note; I also own an 04 s-type with a 3.0 under the hood. It looks different from my 3.0 and has no problem running on the ethenol added gasoline. However after the horrible mechanical experience I had with the ethenol in the x-type, I now use 100% real gas in both. I have been transmission fault free for 5 months now.

Most likely the lock out switch at the brake pedal is at fault, because in order to put it in in to any gear you have to step on the brake first ! Their is a switch located which prevents you put it in gear with out stepping on the brake pedal, so check this switch first.

Stuck transmission on 2004 jaguar X type


This is because you must depress the brake to energize a solenoid to release the shifter, you must get the hood open. sometimes if you have someone push down on the hood as you pull the lever it will open. if not remove the air dam under the bumper and try to move the latches manually by reaching up with something long. Good luck.

My 2005 jaguar s type stuck in reverse. Please help me


My 2005 S-Type was stuck in reverse but the gear stick was stuck in park. After taking the console apart trying to figure out why the shift lock wouldn't open...three hours later I got under the car and discover that one of the two bolts that held the transmission cable in place was missing...I replaced it and that was all it took.

First off check the battery. Try and jump start it. If that does not get the vehicle running you may have a problem with your J gate as it will not start unless in park or neutral. If an internal electrical fault has happened then the micro swith may not send a signal to the ecu to allow the car to start. the J gate is the gear selector by the way

With the car started press on the brake pedal. Listen carefully for a "Click" sound coming from under the gear shift cover. If you do not hear one you will need to test the brake pedal switch, if you hear a click then most likely the lock somehow became disconnected from the solenoid. Remove the shifter cover and the assemble is can be seen for troubleshooting and repair.

Gear locks when i park on even a slight incline


ALWAYS engage the Parking Brake BEFORE putting car into "Park". When you want to get out of "Park", put your foot on the brake pedal, move gear shifter into desired gear, THEN take down Parking Brake. If you get stuck (gear shifter doesn't move), then try the "rocking" method (recruit 1 or 2 folks to push your car from behind while you try to move gear shifter into desired gear). Good luck!

Because there is NO Transmission Pump! You need to #1 Find a NEW Mechanic #2 Have the Shifter Cable Checked. Sounds like that is your Problem.

I, as well as a guy I work with both drive s-types. He had this problem with his.

The problem is with a cable that runs from the shifter to the transmission. There is a bracket which holds the cable in place. This bracket is prone to coming loose and when that happens, your s-type won't shift out of neutral. Simply resecure the bracket and cable. Be sure to use loctite on the bracket screws so it won't happen again.
