Question about 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

4 Answers

Having problems starting my car. Some say that I need a new starter, but others say that the car is not properly in gear. How do I diagnose the problem. The mechanics can't even agree. 98K miles, 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 6 cylinder.

Place the car in neutral and try to start it. Any vehicle will start in neutral. If the vehicle still does not start you can assume that the starter is bad.

Pull the starter and have it tested. My money says that its bad. Lemme know what the result is.

Lapokernews.....Well does the engine cranks. If it doesnt it is possible a battery, a starter or check the power harness. And if it does and dosent starts just keeps on cranking can be a possible fuel pump or a crank sensor.. But do check the fues box under the hood. it must be on your hand side..regards. do quote more about the problem..

Simple, when you turn the key does the engine turn over or nothing happens. if nothing happens step on the brake, move the gear shifter to " N" and turn the key if it starts its your neutrual safety switch located on the trans. then try the same thing in park. Thats if your battery is fully charged and your starter is in good shape

Have you battery tested first, to make sure that they load test it. I've found that a bad battery is the most likely suspect with hard starting issues.

Starter wiill not even engage turned the key on and nothing ran fine when I parked it and got up in the morning and wont even tur n over. Brand new battery

Hmm, possible problems:
- starter or starter solenoid defective.
- neutral switch or wiring thereto defective. Shift selector has to be in Park or Neutral to start. Sometimes brake pedal has to be pressed also for starter to turn.
- remote starter system defective (if you have this) This would be hard to diagnose.
I would first confirm if the starter works by putting 12V directly from positive pole on battery to positive connector on starter solenoid (use jumper cable, and wear goggles in case of massive sparking when you accidentally touch ground.)

2002 hyundai Santa fe will not start. I turn key and starter turned for 3 seconds then stopped and now when i turn key NOTHING. I hear a circuit sound in back of car when i turn key but no other sound. ...

Definitely a starting system problem. That sound you hear in the back is the fuel pump.

Starting system circuit components (besides wiring harness)
1. Ignition Key Switch - closes the starter relay control circuit to energize the relay and close the contacts inside the relay (you can check this by locating the relay in the underhood fuse/relay box and have a friend turn the key while you listen/feel if the relay 'clicks'
2. Starter Relay or its Contacts
3. Starter Solenoid - pushes/pulls the starter gear into the engine's flywheel ring-gear and its contacts close to provide battery power to the starter itself.
4. Starter itself - poor brush contact with the armature's commutator will prevent the starter to spin/turn

If you are 'Electrically' talented, you can check to see if you're getting battery power to the starter solenoid by using a simple 12 volt test light/bulb. Connect one lead to the starter solenoid terminal and the other to chassis/engine ground and have a buddy turn the ignition key - if the light turns 'ON', then you know that particular circuit is OK but the starter solenoid is not energizing to push the starter gear into the flywheel ring-gear to turn the engine over. If it doesn't, the problem is elsewhere (wiring, starter relay, starter relay control circuit, etc).

You can have a qualified Hyundai Service Technician properly diagnose your vehicle. OR, you can Go to www.hmaservice.com and register your vehicle by VIN #.. you'll then have access to wiring diagrams, shop manuals, service bulletins, illustrations, etc.

Try removing the ignition module, usually located right under the coil pack, and having it tested at Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts.

Car stalled at intresection...won't start...new battery..brand new battery..tries to turn over but makes a whining noise

The whining noise is the Starter spinning without its end part, called a "Bendix Drive" working. The Bendix drive is the gear that goes against the flywheel to spin the engine when you turn the key to START. It is possibly the Starter bolts are loose and the gear is too far away from the flywheel to work. This is a very remote possibility.

On your Expedition there are 2 or 3 small wires on top of the Starter that make the Bendix work. With luck, the connections are the problem and cleaning or replacing the wire ends will make the Starter work. The connections go to another part of the Starter called a Solenoid.

There was a recall for the Starter wiring Harness around the time your Expedition was built. Contact a Dealer with your Vin# to see if it was done. Now the Solenoid I mentioned may have a Bad magnet inside it. You will not know until the wire connections are known to be good. It is important that the wiring is fixed first, because all the problems can be fixed with this 1 repair.

You will not have to pull out the Starter and replace it if the wiring repair works. Ideally an Electronic scanner should be used to diagnose any other problem that can be present. This device would show up my last concern, a bad crankshaft sensor. This part will cause the Starter to be overpowered and can temporarily bind the engine. The Starter will either "Kickout" in each starting attempt or jam the Bendix gear.

At the most, you will need a Starter, wiring repair and a sensor. At the least, just wiring repair. I hope you find my reply thorough and informative.

Have a 95 chev s10 with 2.2 and standard trans. intermiten won't start when it dosen't start I can hear the starter spining but it dosent engage with the motor, already replaced starter and selenoid and...

Was the starter shimmied to match up with the fly wheel properly so the starter gear fly wheel ring gear don't bind or out to far apart that they don't reach each other. The other problem is that if the starter gear was to far apart, it may have shaved the teeth on the starter gear causing your engine not to turn.

My 03 Navigator started having problems not starting

Have you removed the 'new' starter to examine the teeth on it? If they are broken as well, the flywheel 'ring' gear may need to be replaced which entails removing either the engine or the transmission to be able to service the flywheel. If you have an automatic transmission, the flywheel part is called a 'flex-plate' and the ring gear is integral with the plate. If the new starter doesn't have damaged teeth, then it may be defective electrically--warranty time. Hope this helps you!

sounds like servo/solenoid problems for those gears run the fault codes or have it inspected and properly diagnosed by an accredited transmission specialist shop
it is running with no reported noises or other problems so at this point it will not need a new transmission

2003 Honda Element Battery, Starter, Solenoid or Altenator

im having the same problem. I went to one place and they said I needed a new starter. So I took it to another and they said the wires to the starter were not good and needed to be replaced, they put in a new battery also. Then 2 days later it wouldnt start again. So I took it back they diagnosed it and could not find a issue with it. So the guy told me it is something electrical most probably a relay of a sort. A coworker told me to go to a electrical specialist.
