Question about Honda Civic

1 Answer

I lost my key to my '98 Honda Civic. Used a key, made as a duplicate but was ground on the wrong blank so the pattern is there but the length of the key is about a half inch longer. I didn't push the key in all the way and was able to start the car. Now I can't turn the key off further than accessories position. Also am i draining the battery being sruck in this position? Help!

Yes it will drain the battery if any accessories are on. Try wiggling the key back and forth to get it out, and turn the steering wheel back and forth as well. If you get it out....take it back to where you got it cut and demand a refund. If you can't get it out, you'll probably need to call a locksmith.

Key Duplicated won't open door works with ignition only

Your duplicate key may be a valet key which would not let a parking lot attendant into the trunk or the doors. If you don't have the original master key, you may have to get a locksmith involved. I doubt the dealer would have key codes for a model that old.

My 98 civic when driving it shuts off loses all power...turn key off n turn on again like reseting it starts up why is this?

It sounds like you have a major electrical issue or bad (shorting) battery. When you say it loses all power, you mean radio, lights, horn etc? Clean Battery terminals & look for ground wires that need to be cleaned & reattached. Check the black ground cable that goes to engine block. The more I type the more I think its a bad ground somewhere or the battery is shorting out inside the case. Good luck and I hope this helps you.

I have a Honda CRV 1999 Model, but it has only one Ignition key. I intend to duplicate this key, is it ok to go ahead or do I have to do any form of re-programming before the duplicated key can be used...

In all likelihood, there is an ignition chip in your key and it will have to be programmed, especially if you have a laser cut key. Plus, there is nothing wrong with having a backup key. In fact, it's a great idea.

Lost keys... cheaper to replace ignition than to order keys... cant remove tumbler assymbly.. 98 honda civic

It might pay you to call a locksmith. Good ones know how to get into cars and they usually know how to get the codes needed to cut you a new key. That might cost you about $15 depending versus all the hassle for you.

inside the hood there are two clips holding the shiftting cable you may have lost them. you may want to check the driveshafts because one of them might have poped out.

I can't turn the key in the ignition in my 98 honda civic. i know the car starts b/c i have remote start and used it. i checked that the wheel isn't locked and the car is in park.

You may need a new ignition key cylinder or your key grooves may have worn down and no longer mesh with your ignition cylinder. Good luck. Mark

Theft of 2004 Honda Civic

since the ignition key cylinder wasn't damaged, i can think of a few possible sernarios.

- a tow/repo truck was used

- if you bought the car used, the previous owner had a copy of the key and used it to gain access and start the car.

- if you have taken the car to a honda dealership for service/repairs, someone at the dealership may have encoded (the transponder on) a duplicate key. they would also have no problem looking up your address.
