First youll need to locate top dead center, remove the first plug on the driverside, have someone tap key until compression blows out have your finger over the sparkplug hole while the key is tapped, after the air blows out remove the dist cap, then find line on crank and line up to 10 degrees btdc, look at the dist rotor # 1 on the cap will be the prong cloesest the where rotor points going counter clockwise, so mark side of dist, then install cap follow line you made to locate the #1 prong on cap start there that # 1, here a diagram with firing order and cylinder id. hope this helps.I bought a 79 trans am but the spark plug wires - b5327b1.gif

I have a 79 New Yorker with a 318 it has a hard time starting we just replaced air filter, fuel filter and lines plugs, Roter and cap it floods real easy

The old chryslers are very touchy. It sounds like the float is stuck on the carburetor flooding the engine or it is stuck closed not allowing enough gas to get into the cylinders. Pull a spark plug and see or smell if there is gas on it.If so is there spark? You have solid state ignition I believe. Pull a spark plug wire off of a plug and hold with insulated pliers and see if you are getting spark to the plugs. The engine needs air, fuel and spark to run. Check firing order for the wires 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 is the firing order. That should get you started. Let me know if you need more troubleshooting.

Proper placement of spark plug wire to proper spark plug and so called distrubor . Need a picture diagram to check and confirm connection.

Not sure if you have the 2.2L or 3.4L, however I have included both below,

For the 2.2L:
Firing Order:
1-3-4-2
Cylinders:
(back of engine)
1---2----3----4
(front of engine)

For the 3.4L
Firing Order:
1-2-3-4-5-6
Cylinders:
(back of engine)
2-------1
4-------3
6-------5
(front of engine)
Ignition Connections:
(back)
|(5)-(2)| |(3)-(6)| |(4)-(1)|
(front)

Number 6 cylinder misfire

That has to be either a bad plug in the number six cylinger, or a bad spark plug wire. First hook the scanner up and erase the code, then turn it back off. Check both ends of the spark plug wire and if they look okay, make sure they are firmly hooked back up.
Hook up the scanner and start the engine. If the code comes back, I would replace the plug at first, then hook your scanner up before the engine is running and erase the code. Then start the engine. If it comes back, then you know the spark plug wire is the culprit.

Note. If you erase the code and it doesn't come right back, don't be elated. It may take driving it a bit before it comes on again.
