Question about 1998 Ford Taurus
You will need to have the car scanned for trouble codes and report them back to us. There are about a thousand codes, so we don't like to guess why the light is on. Many parts stores will give a free scan, autozone and advance among them

You need to find the code and then search it google works great, take it to a shop and have them run the codes shouldnt be more than 20 dollars if you get charged at all, if you want to just see if it is a ghost fault you can try un pluging the ground from the battery (the black terminal with a minus symbol on it) for approximatly a min then reconnect it and start it and see if the fault reappears if it does it could be somethin as simple as a o2 sensor.

This problem could be caused by a number of things, a pipe come out of place, a blown gasket, a in the engine; all of these include heavy engine work, and i wouldn't reccomend trying to fix it yourself, take it to your local garage and they'll sort it for you
Please rate my help, thanks

Take it to your local Auto Zone store. They will hook it up to a scanner for FREE and read the codes saved in the computer. They should give you a printout with the codes and possible problems with your car. You can decide where to take it to get it serviced knowing what the problem is. It's usually a bad sensor. Auto Zone could quote you a price on the part so you have an idea of what your repair bill should be. Auto Zone only sells parts. They do not install them. Good Luck!

Take the vehicle to any local auto parts store that will read the codes. WRITE THEM DOWN, and report back here for further help.
