Question about Dodge Ram 2500

2 Answers

I have a 2008 Dodge RAM 2500 with 6.7 Cummins. I am getting codes : PO 489, PO 42E, PO 489 P/D and PO 420E P/D. I assume these have something to do with emissions. Can you tell me exactly what they are? Is this something under warranty?

I'm not sure I want to start removing or blocking anything right away. Especially not until I know if it could void any warranties.

P0489-egr Control Circuit Low
P042E - EGR Control Stuck Open

So when the engine is cold, feel the EGR valve.
They start it up.
At idle it should stay cold.
It is heats up quickly, then the EGR is open at idle, and it should not be.
It is probably manually binding from exhaust deposits.
It can be cleaned with a wire brush or chemicals.

If that does not work, you can just block it off.
EGR is not good for any engine, because it causes deposits on the back of the valves. But it is necessary on some high compression engines, in order to poison the mixture enough to prevent predetonation. But a diesel can never have predetonation, so the EGR is totally negative and should be removed for optimal life span.

The first suggestion was to free the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation). It has a pointed piston that moved either by vacuum or solenoid, to plug or open the exhaust to the intake manifold. And since the exhaust is so full of deposits, it frequently gets bond up.
So you don't have to remove or plug anything in order to fix it.

I only suggested plugging or removing as a practical alternative to cleaning or replacing it every year, as is common.
But don't take my word for it, try the Cummins forum, where they say removing the EGR increases life span and reliability, but also improves mileage and decreases temperature.
Diesels should simply not have an EGR. It is too harmful.

So many people know about how bad an EGR is on a diesel, that many people sell kits to make removal easier:
    http://www.thoroughbreddiesel.com/HS-Per...
But again, you can clean or replace the EGR if you want.
The way to check operation is to feel the EGR temperature.
If it is open, it gets hot even before the engine warms up.
The EGR must not be open at idle or high speed, because it will reduce power too much.
The EGR valve is supposed to only open during midrange.
So if it heats up right away at idle, with a cold engine, then it is stuck open all the time.
If it is stuck closed all the time, even at midrange, leave it.

Mil light on2008 Dodge Ram 2500 with 6.7 cummins diesel

You have a nice truck there. Sorry the mil light is on but you will need to have the codes read to figure out what the ECM is saying. You should be able to go to Auto-Zone and have them read for free. The light needs to be on to accurately tell what is potentially wrong. Go find out, it may be nothing. But at the least with the code digits you can write back with them we may be able to give you more info.
Let me know how you are making out.
