Question about Chevrolet Cavalier

I replaced the starter on a 1999 Chev Cavilier but when I went to start the car the starter kept trying to start the car even though the car was already running. I think i may have crossed one or a couple of wires can you help? can you tell me where the wires go connected

Hi, i think you have put the MAIN HEAVY CABLE direct to the STARTER MOTOR on the SOLINOID. this will keep the starter motor running. take battery lead NEGATIVE CABLE OFF the BATTERY, and change the MAIN HEAVY CABLE from the SOLINOID terminal to the other MAIN terminal on the SOLINOID and NORMALLY it SHOULD go with a SLIGHTY (smaller cable this GO'S to the FUSEBOX rest of car POSITIVE FEED). the other small wire is the solinoid START WIRE. the solinoid has 2 circuits the first circuit is HEAVY BATTERY LEAD to 1 terminal on the solinoid. the other side of the solinoid HEAVY CABLE to STARTER MOTOR. this is only 1 side of the SOLINOID (THIS IS A VERY VERY HEAVY SWITCH). the other side of the SOLINOID is the START SIDE (REMOTE CONTACT) of the SOLINOID, by turning the IGNITION KEY to STARTER POSITION, this operates the SOLINOID. this makes contact to run the starter motor. once the connections are done REPLACE NAGATIVE BATTERY LEAD and start the car. gerry

So the reason i believe its the starter. Yesterday car wouldnt turnover. No click at all. Not even with jump. I hit the starter with a hammer a couple of times and it started. Though it started really slow...


You didn't say what make of car, but if it is Chev, Chrysler or similar that has the solenoid mounted on the starter you may have crossed the small wires on the solenoid switch.

Last night my starter kept running whether the engine was on or off now my vehicle will not start.


check your starter teeth and the fly wheel teeth they both could be trashed now, im guessing that the starter silonoid went bad and caused the starter to try and turn the engine over even though it has been runing and when the engine was off this could be catastrouphic for the fly wheel teeth if the engine transmision was not in nuteral?

Car does not start, sounded like battery, but battery ok. Turn key and a light on the lower left of instrument panel comes on, just says "CHECK" and what could be a picture of the engine(?), and the alarm...


I'm not an expert on cars, but from my experience, if the lights go dim while trying to start, but the engine doesnt turn, then it's usually the starter which is bad. It's because the starter is faulty and drawing too much battery power. I'v also heard of many people having problems with the security system (with cavaliers). but if the lights are going dim, that probably means the battery power IS reaching the starter, so i would concentrate on the starter first. If i remember correctly, my brother had a ford, and the ground wire came off of the starter, and when he tried to start it, there was nothing, but the lights would go dim. Again, similar to a faulty starter. Even if the starter itself is bolted to the engine, if the wires going inside the starter aren't connected properly, that could cause the problem. Other than starter being the problem, possibly a bad ignition switch???

Car wont start


Probably a bad starter activator find it and tap on it sometimes it will kick the starter, but it means the starter will have to be replaced.

may work may not...on older cars when the starter went bad and the car wouldn't start you could tap the starter with a long screwdriver or hammer lightly and the solenoid would engage and start the car but you need to get it home or to shop cause it wouldn't work again..if you try this and the starter engages then the starter needs to be replaced if you haven't already tried..if the lights are flashing when you try to start the vehicle then o would say its prob a malfunctioning alarm system..try to diengage it by pulling fuse for alarm..don't know if you can though..check the starter...good luck

Starter keeps turning even when key is turned off


Curious, do you have an autostart installed? I had that happen that the Autostart shorted and just kept telling my starter to continue cranking

Anti theft system on my 2000 malibu goes off when driving


Its your ignition switch. Its not recognizing when you turn it to the start position. The little terminals inside the switch get burned and wear down. When mine went out, the whole power to the dash would flicker, even cut out when driving. I actually wired my system to 1 toggle switch for on and off, I kept the anti theft wires attached to the switch. I also have a starter switch, if I fail to turn the key like I'm trying to start the car, the theft light comes on and the car dies right after starting.
