Question about 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300

1 Answer

1988 Mercedes 300E. None of my power windows work suddenly. Is there another fuse not in the main fuse box? Curiously, the power seats mysteriously stopped working as well but then worked fine when left overnight.

theres 2 american type fuses behind the battery in a 300e 1988 its a red box with a clear cover that u lift open and two red american fuses are inside this can f everything up if they are burnt. but your car wouldnt start either. its not likely a fuel pump relay if your car starts? your door seat adjustment switch might be corroded get a new one at the junkyard u can try to clean the one you have its pretty hard and time consuming go to the junk yard two dollars. like i ssaid before check all your wires in the center console tape bare copper electrical tape cap with electrical caps available at walmart or home depot or autozone. you can move fuses around or take all out and inspect sometimes you cant see the break in the fuse right away. junkyard get fuses for days grab all relays too.

the fuses behind battery are behind a plastic divider thing unless yours was pulled out also behind there is two relays one of the relays is for the fuel pumps theres like 3 different part numbers so not sure which is which just grab them both off several old mercedes one is bound to work otherwise over 100 on internet. there is a way to resoldier them if your good at solder ing.you might also want to clean the contacts between buttons and whatthey plug into you can use 91% rubbing alcohol or goo gone and several qtips

its unlikely the american fuses or relays are causing this problem. the relays above the main fuse box one of those could be a problem but there like no info anywhere that i can find that tells you what each relay controls unless someone has the actual mercedes repair manual. taking that fuse box cover off is a b$%^& cause its right up on the edge of the hood really not a comfortable spot to use a screwdriver. cordless drill screwdriver is quicker. You also might want to check your battery cables sometimes when they are loose the power goes out but when you try the car later maybe you seat down and the contacts work again for a second or long enough to drive somewhere

First the sensor in the rear gearbox may be bad or corroded for sensing wheel speed. Also the engine wiring harness may be falling apart. From 1991-1995 the US made MB use biodegradable material on the wiring. When the insulation cracks you get shorts in the system. The same wires are in your EHA on the air inlet area. Check and replace as needed.

most likely dirty switches or bad fuses. Try rotating fuses and then try moving them again. Corrosion on the fuses cause "gremlins" in the system. If not find a junkyard and pull out a set of used switches or try autohausaz.com for new replacements.

I think you are the victim of an otherwise good idea; theft protection that has disabled the electrical system.

I believe you will have better luck going to an MB forum and posting your question there:

Please help. 1994 Mercedes E320 power windows are dead.

Under the rear seat cushion on the drivers side is a control module/ relay box that operates all the windows and the sunroof for the car. To lift up the rear seat cushion there is a tab on both sides of the rear seat that you push on while lifting the seat up. Once the seat cushion is out you can find the relay housing on the driver side right near the bend. Start there since everything went out all at once. Wrecking yard is the best place to pick up another one.

I have a 1988 300e Benz. The problem is the headlight relay seems to be out. Which relay would it be in the screwed down fuse box ? I have 5 in that box

an easy way to tell is that when you take the headlight relay out, all the headlights should go out as well. So try them one at a time. The other ones would be the turn signal flasher, fuel pump relay, emergency flasher, and AC relay.
