Problem for Volkswagen 2002 Beetle Turbo S

Oil consumption

By Bomber - usenet poster

" "
I bought a 2002 beetle last December and according to the hand book you are
suppose

to do a oil change every 5000 miles after 5000 miles they told me it used 2
quarts of oil but they sad it was normal to burn oil in a new car.

Now after I got 18500 miles on it it "burns" about 1 quart of oil every 1300
miles and they still tell me it's normal for that kind of engine. Is there
anybody that really believes that a brand new car burn that much oil.Im
really getting tiered of hearing its normal that bull shit, now I'm thinking
about taking this to better business bureau and see what they can do about
it, is there any body out there that has the same problem as me or is it
"normal"??

-   too funny I just brought my 2007 VW Passat 2.0 in for an oil consumption test - they changed the oil added 5w-40 so far 600 miles and 1 quart down - I have a feeling that no matter how much oil I burn the dealer will tell me that is normal. Car is fine but I miss my BMW already darn this recession and outsourcing :-) -   Guest

-   I have a 2006 Passat and burn three quart every 5K miles. I too have been told it's normal by my dealer. I would believe them but I have already had them tell me the bearing whine I heard was normal. Within 3 weeks the compressor self destructed under the hood. This car has been a total lemon having the following repairs: two new computers, instrument cluster, turbo charger, front end struts, complete airconditioning system. You have to pick your fights in life, I'm done with the American and European cars. I'm going to just trade her off and buy another Infinity. I put over 180K on my last one and only repaired a power window switch. My American and German car experiences have been beyond bad, their hideous! -   nissenj3639

First step is have the dealer do a oil consumption test( it's FREE), and
take it from there! Depending on the results you might be able to get the
rings replaced. Also, a qt in 1300 miles is within the low end of the
"normal" range

I keep hearing or reading this, but I am still a little pissed off my 02
Jetta is burning a quart every 1200 miles. This is the third 2.0 I have
owned, and the other two needed NO oil between 3000 mile changes. My 79
Rabbit with close to 300,000 miles on the clock without a rebuild doesn't
even use that much oil!

I am hoping everyone is right, and this is normal...but somehow I have my
doubts.

Burn oil in a new car?
that's dealer's BS. I know there is a 1 QT tollerance, but I would be
pissed if my new car burned oil (even a quarter).
If it burns oil when new it will continue to do so.(bad luck)
I own a 90 Corrado G60 (100k) and a 97 Cabrio (70K)
I dont have to add any oil, not even a single DROP.
OIl changed every 3500K

I hear its happening with other OEMs as well. It's all in the new ring design
that is being used in order to justify using 5W20 or 5W30 as motor oil. The
thinner the better mileage but I just don't think the new rings are working
out. IMHO. It's much easier to burn up a newer engine if you are not careful
by watching your oil once a week at least.

But recent VW owner's manuals still recommend 5W-40 oil.

It's not the dealer but the guidelines VW has set for oil comsumptions. Not
too many years ago Porsche said 1qt per 750 miles was normal for the 911
series cars. One thing I haven't figured out is why to 2.oL uses oil and the
1.8t and TDI don't?????

I guess some things never change. Back in 1977, I bought a new VW Rabbit.
With about 2K miles on the car, all the dash warning lights would come on
when I went around a corner. I KNEW it wasn't low on oil because I'd just
checked it about 1000 miles back, and it was full. Well, it WAS the oil and
it cost me quite a bit because the VW warranty wouldn't cover it. I sold
the car and a couple of years later there was a class action law suit
relating to that engine, as it consumed large quantities of oil due to
poorly designed valve stem seals. One must wonder if the current problems
people report with the 2.0 engine aren't related to seals as well. Not an
expensive fix compared to problems involving oil control rings.

My 87 Cabriolet used only 1 quart of oil every 3,000 miles near the end,
when it had 265,000 miles on the engine. For all I know, it's still on the
road somewhere!
