I have a 1998 BMW 740i, and the sunroof wont open. I have removed the panel cover and tried to manually open the roof with an allen wrench and it will only move a 1/4 turn. the electric motor has the same result, 1/4 turn. does anyone have an answer for this?

Do you have an owner's handbook? What happens is that they use a rod that looks like a big screw. If that track has been damaged in any way, it can bind and may require excessive force to close. The manual indicates that some resistance is felt at the halfway point and that if if triggers it to retract, to hold the button forward. If this does not work, I would push with my hand while holding the button til it is closed. The headliner may have to be removed to gain axcess to be repaired. Let me know on the owner's handbook and what you find with the sunroof.

How to close sunroof panel for BMW x3

1. Remove the panel above your centre rear view mirror.
(this is described in your cars owner manual)

2. When your rear sunroof is open, in the oppening gap you can see the control carriage. There is one Left and Right.

3. Take a screw driver and push both carriages backwards (use some but not extreme force). Possibly you can move one side and not the other, this is the symptom of the defect.

4. Take your (on board) hex wrench tool, put in the hex hole of the motor above your rear view mirror.

5. Manually close the roof.

take care to do this correctly.
Hope this helps

Sun roof wont close

theres a way to close it by taking off the panel above that covers the motor and putting a allen wrench into the middle of the motor unit and turning it i think clockwise. If the gears are stripped it wont work...but if its just the motor then manually turning the gear should close it. I figured out which way it needed to be turned to close then put a allen attachment on my cordless drill and made it easier cause it will take awhile

How do you manually close the sunroof from the vent position . IS it not possible to use a wrench/torque wrench to wind it closed.

There should be a cover on the front side roof next to the sunroof opening, remove the cover, under it you should see a portion of the drive mechanism for the sunroof, look for a hex head socket in this drive mech, insert the size allen wrench and turn, it should turn and wind down fairly easy, do not force it as you may break it, use caution. Hope this helps, let me know

99 malibu sunroof stuck open.

The motor is in the front area of the roof unit.If you can drop the switch and trim around the front of sunroof unit and headliner ,you can can access the sunroof drive motor. The drive shaft of the motor can be turned mannually with an allen wrench which will assist in closing and identifying the problem area.If its hung very badly ...remove the sunroof motor then push the roof closed.

How do i manually close a sunroof for a mitusbishi montero after the sunroof motor fails?

Depending on the year of your vehicle....
Earlier models had a sunroof wrench. The manual states that ..."the electronic sunroof system cannot be operated manually. The sunroof wrench that was used in previous models is not provided".

Now that may mean that if you had the wrench it could be operated manually.

I did find something else here :
NOTE: If there is a problem with the sunroof motor so that the
roof lid glass cannot close fully, use an Allen wrench to turn the
gear section of the sunroof motor to fully close the roof lid

Access seems to be just above the sunroof switch.
