Yes you have to drop the gas tank, either that or pull off the bed. Once you do that you remove the sending unit from the tank. You may as well replace the fuel pump while your in there whether you need to or not. This way you save yourself from dropping the tank again.

Gas needle wont move

If it is showing that it is empty, the float may have sank. However, the cause could be the gauge in the dash or the sender and the sender is in the tank. It is not easy to change because you have to drop the tank. It is cheaper to replace the sender than it is to change the dash because the dash guages are all on one unit. However there are tests that can be run to see what the issue is and the tests are done using meters and jumpers etc to see if the guage responds to those. Then they know whether it is the sender or the guage.

Fuel guage

the guage gets a earth signal from the sender ,, depending on the amount the guage rises accordingly ,, if the wire is touching earth any where the guage will go up to full,,,, disconnect the fuel sender and see does the guage drop,, it should if there is no short in the wiring ,,,,if it does drop you then have to recheck the sender ,,, if the guage stays full you have to check wiring for a short ,,,,, if you are able you could strip out the guage and disconnect the plug at the rear of it to make sure that the guage itself is not faulty,,,,

Filled truck up with fuel and fuel guage stoped working

There is a TSB for this issue ( TSB 08-2-9 ).

The problem is high sulfur content fuel will cause a problem with the fuel level sending unit, and cause it to read incorrectly.

The 2 times I had this happen, I was not at my normal brand fuel ( had it happen with Shell fuel both times ).

I fueled at 1/2 tank with my normal brand, and then after another 1/2 tank fueled again, and the problem went away.

If you want, the TSB lists new revision fuel level senders, that you can drop the fuel tank, and replace your exiting one with to cure the problem.

The correct P/N depends on your truck cab & bed config, and options

Fuel gauge registers full when filled with gas....drive 20mi and then drops to zero...still gas in the tank

The sender unit in the tank is the most likely cause. To test the panel unit, remove the wire from the fuel tank unit and gound it. The panel gauge needle should move up full scale to hot. Remove the wire from the ground and the gauge should return to empty. If this test is ok, the tank unit needs to be replaced.

Gas gauge in the dash malfunctioning - 1990 Nissan Hardbody truck

It sounds like the float on the sending unit is sinking. Don't know what the float is made of, but over time, it will soak up gas and start to get heavy. This would cause your problem. I don't think it's the gauge, but if you want to test it, disconnect the wires at the tank. The gauge will either go to full or empty. If you ground the sending wire, the gauge should respond the opposite way it was. good luck

I have a 1982 Ford F100 (straight 6 cyl) that is having a fuel delivery problem. I have already replaced both the inline fuel filter and the mechanical fuel pump and still there is no gas reaching the...

inside the gas tank there is a little round screen on the senion unit which is also the pickup line and fuel guage. take it out and get a can of brake parts cleaner and flush out the screen and then the fuel should go through that is about the only thing i thnk would be left since you have changed the pump and filter.

88 Ford F250 rear gas tank will not work

Sounds like the rear fuel pump in the tank is not working and the float or sender is bad also. check to see if the rear pump is working should make a humming noise.
