1996 Lumina 3.1L engine

Think your engine will be fine.

We have an '88 2.8l V6 (think its the same block) that has been making a
piston slap noise when cold for at least a couple of years. Runs great and
doesn't use oil. Probably has well over 160KM on it now - don't know
because the odometer sticks, one day it will be showing 50K then the next
day 800K. Anyone know a fix for this.

Mine does this too. I think it's just a matter of the tappets needing to be filled with oil, which takes up to three minutes after start-up.

Hi,

My father got the same problem on is APV '90 at 12 000 miles on it. Is was
a problem on the engine, the 3 front piston had prematured wear. The first
time, they changed the piston but ine year after, the problem reeapared and
that time, they changed the block engine. Since them, it seem ok after 100
000 miles.

I own a 95 grand am with 3.1 engine and observe the same problem. I will
talk with my dealer when i will go for engine oil change, my car have 52
000 km on it and warrenty will expire at 60 000 km.

If anyone have information on that, please, inform me
