1993 Geo Metro

Geo Metro

By lawyer - usenet poster

Good Evening,

I need some help! I am trying attempting to replace my front wheel bearings
on my 1993 Metro. I have removed the caliper and the 5 bolts that hold the
wheel hub and disc to the car. I borrowed a slide hammer from Pep Boys, but
it stinks. It isn't the kind that attaches directly to the studs. Anyway, I
am having a heck of a time removing the hub/discIs there something I am
missing? Can anyone give me a hint on how to complete the job?

All advise is much appreciated.

you did remove the nut that holds the shaft on.. right? big nut between 30 and
36mm in size. some hubs need to have the bearings pressed in and out, or
the hub comes as an hub with bearing assembly. that could be the problem in
your case.

After the caliper is off, removing the drive shaft nut and washer is also a must. Next get at least a 5lb slide hammer that will bolt onto the lug studs to remove the rotor hub; It's doesn't come out easy; you really have to pound on it. It can be done or assisted using a cold chisel between the rotor and steering knuckle, but it's a pain and it will ruin the brake rotor (been there - done that, at least the new rotors are cheap). The outer bearing may come with the hub or stay in the knuckle.

If you have to get the drive axle out of the knuckle to get the inner bearing out (I'm not sure whether it come out the back or front), I recommend removing the lower ball joint from the knuckle. The bolt for the ball joint shaft must be REMOVED to free the ball joint. Be careful of the dust boot on the ball joint - replacing it is expensive.

Note: The information from the 1995 service manual may not be valid for the '93. I see references to several parts that my '92 doesn't have, and I would put the outer bearing and bushing on the hub and then insert the hub into the knuckle (keeping the bushing in place between the bearings while pounding the hub back in is very difficult (again, been there - done that).

I hope that helps.

You don't need a press. You can use a vice, a big enough socket to fit around the inner wheel bearing assembly, 2"x4", and a hamer to get them out. To get the race back in you use the vice to press it in as far as it can, and then use the socket, wood, and hammer to get all the way back in.

Well, according to my 1995 Metro service manual:

Raise vehicle

Remove:
1. Tire and Wheel assembly
2. Brake Caliper, caliper carrier and rotor
3. Unstake and remove drive axle nut and washer (see note below)
4. Hub from knuckle with slide hammer
5. Cotter Pin and castle nut from the tie rod end
6. Tie rod end from knuckle (special tool may be required)
7. Ball stud nut and bolt; separate ball joint from knuckle
8. Two strut-to-knuckle bolts and nuts and remove steering knuckle from vehicle.

Now to the wheel bearing:
Remove:
1. Inner and outer bearing oil seals (special tool may be required)
2. Inner race and bearing from knuckle.
3. One snap ring from outer side of steering knuckle
4. Outer bearing from steering knuckle
5. Outer bearing race from wheel hub using a press

Bearing Installation:
Install:
1. Bearing assembly into knuckle (special tools may be required)
2. Outer bearing into steering knuckle
3. One snap ring to outer side of steering knuckle
4. Inner bearing and race into steering knuckle
5. Outer bearing race onto wheel hub using a press
Apply wheel bearing grease to lip of inner oil seal
Align hole in seal with hole in steering knuckle (if ABS)
6. Inner oil seal to the inboard side of the knuckle (special tool may
be required)
7. Outer oil seal to the outboard side of the steering knuckle (special
tool may be required)
8. Steering knuckle to vehicle

Steering Knuckle
Install:
Apply a light coat of wheel bearing grease to outside of hub shaft
1. Hub and outer bearing race to knuckle using a press
2. Steering knuckle to vehicle; secure with two strut-to-knuckle bolts
and nuts.
Tighten: Strut-to-knuckle bolts to 59 lb.ft

3. Ball stud to knuckle; secure with bolt and nut.
Tighten: Ball joint nut and bolt to 44 lb.ft

4. Tie rod end to knuckle; secure with castle nut and cotter pin
Tighten: Tie rod end castle nut to 32 lb.ft

5. Drive axle washer and nut.
6. Brake rotor, caliper carrier and caliper.
Tighten: Drive axle nut to 129 lb.ft
Stake drive axle nut using a hammer and punch
7. Tire and wheel assembly.

Lower vehicle.

From personal experience, its easier to loosen and tighten the drive
axle nut with the wheels on the ground and a very long handle wrench.
Also looks like some special tools might be required, as well as a
hydraulic press to get the bearings in and out.
Good luck.
