Question about 1988 Ford Bronco II

1 Answer

I followed the alternator wires trying to locate my voltage regulator on my 1988 Ford Broncho II, 2.9L V6. They go into the firewall on the drivers side, but I can't locate the VR under the dash any place. Suggestions?

I don't believe there is a VR outside of the alternator. The RV is incorporated into the alternator. The wire going into the firewall is probably the sending wire for the battery/alt light on the instrument panel. If you have more questions, please ask. I may be able to find a wiring diagram

first check for voltage with the car running..anything over 16 volts is too high..most run at 14.5 to 15..the regulator (if not in the alternator already ) is a small block usually on the firewall .. to find locate the wires on the back of the alternator.. if they go to a box on the firewall thats the regulator..if they go straight to the battery positive, then its a built in regulator,,auto parts will check for free..

Interesting.
You may need a wiring diagram for the engine.
Unplugging the regulator turns off the alternator which should not affect the ignition system. Unless it is over charging somehow. Or the alternator load on the engine is causing a missfire to be worse.
Its possible you have a ground problem somewhere too.

2003 FORD E150 NEW ALT AND NEW BATTERY STILL NOT CHARGING

Your wiring diagram shows a fusible link between the battery and alternator. Also shows an optional voltage regulator. Trace the wire from the alternator back to the battery. Look for that fuse and regulator. I will paste the diagram below.

88 ford 150 6cy 2 plug alternator wire coming off from 8 oclock conection where should it go have chrging problem any advise woul be helpful thanks

if there are two wires that plug into the alternater and a larger cable that bolts to it then there is a seperat voltage regulator located on the firewall. trace the wires back to it to find it. take it off and take it to your prefered aoutoparts store ( i prefer advance auto parts, very helpfull). have them test it. if it is bad just replace it and you should be good. if the alternator only has one wire and the one cable the regulator is inside the alternator. take off the whole alternater and have it tested. same deal. if you have anymore questions let me know. :)

Overcharging alternator is killing my battery. is the voltage regulator in the computer? 1992 plymouth grand voyager 3.3 v6

This year it is not supposed to be in the computer, look on the firewall in the middle,I believe it is flat, and has a three wire connector, but only two wires in the plug, see if you can find it.

My 7.3 L diesel ford f-250 shows the battery light (check charge system) on in the dash. I tried to drive it and the voltage gauge started dropping into the 10-11 v range. I replaced the alternator...

You must have an older vehicle, but I am pretty sure the 7.3 was put out after the voltage regulator was put in the alternator. What you are describing is a voltage regulator on the the firewall. If this is so,replace the voltage regulator on the firewall, with a new one. This will be the problem most likely. The voltage regulator on the firewall should be kind of flat, almost square, and a wide plug, goes all the way across the voltage regulator. If You don`t have external regulator, then it is built in the alternator, and the alternator you purchased is bad.Be sure the wires on the back of the alternator are not broken anywhere. The big post ,largest wire,on the back of the alternator is the out put wire.It should go to the battery. If it does not have 13.65 to 14.25 volts on the back of the alternator, and at the battery positive post.Like I said,I believe the voltage regulator is on the firewall,if it looks like I described, then it is a regulator, replace this part(voltage regulator)and it will solve your problem.I hope this was some help, please let us know, thank you.

1988 honda accord voltage regulator.Where is it located at?

The voltage regulator is probably in the alternator. I don't think nowdays you can buy voltage regulator separate. If the voltage regulator is bad, you'll need to buy an alternator.
