1987 Ranger Problem

Problem: I have a 1987 Ford Ranger 2.3L, Fuel Inj., 5 spd.
About 6 months ago, the intermittent problem started.
While driving, the engine just dies. Bam!! I can immediately
restart it by cranking it. Or sometimes it restarts about 1-3
second after it quits.

I check the ECC error codes and got a 14 (PIP problem)
and an 18.

I have replace with new/ recond...

- engine ignition module
- rotor
- distributor cap
- wires
- ECC computer

Short of a "exorcism", do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,

The inertia switch does NOT cut the PIP signal!!!

All it does is open the fuel pump circuit. The code 14 is a real big
clue to your problem. You have either a wiring problem or an ignition
module problem.

The inertia switch is not the problem with this truck.

Dan E. West < < I would check the fuel inertia switch, it is located in the passenger
footwell behind the carpet. Before pushing the reset button in, start
the engine and give it a tap on the housing with your palm and see if
the engine dies. This could also explain your ignition related trouble
codes, as it will cut all signals to the ignition. Simple, but worth a
try.

My name is Jonathan and I have a 1987 ranger. You got to bypass your inertia switch on the floorboard near your ECU. This is a switch that shuts your motor off if you get in an accident. I have had to push my ranger several miles before I figured this out. Just get a jumper wire and run it from one female end to the other and that will solve that problem until the Ranger virus strikes again. Don't get me wrong I love my ranger but I have had to do a oil pan gasket, throttle positioning sensor. brake lines, master cylinder, head gasket, exhaust manifold gasket, new exhaust, plugs wires, timing over and over again, body work, master cylinder, ignition switch, just to mention a few lol. All in all just bypass your inertia switch you can find it in a ranger electrical schematic. A new one will cost you like 70 dollars at a dealership and I wish somebody would of told me this before I had to push my truck 8 miles back to my house during winter so a snow truck wouldn't blow it off the road.
