I have a 1990 Ford Escort which starts and then a couple seconds later the engine shuts off. It seems to do this when it is cold more than when it is warm. It is getting gas. During the short time it is running it runs fine. It acts as though the ignition just shuts off. Sometimes it does backfire as it shuts off. I don't know if this is due to the distributer, faulty sensor, EGR valver or something else.
If your Accelerator pedal was changin positions by itself prior to trouble you may have a bad Throttle position sensor. I replaced mine 3x already,Its easy to change once you do it. Also FWIW you could get a Computer codes Reader for about 30$ that plugs into underhood receptacle and takes codes outta computer,Only trouble with reader is you may jump to conclusions an start replacing wrong stuff,,Also is your Fuel pump shuttin off? Mine was INSIDE gas tank and was fun changing,I had to buy a special tool to separate gasline connectors! Also dont wait past 60k to change Timing belt or car will die on a rr track like mine did! See if Plugs getting spark when crankin engine,,make sure Safety shutoff for collisions to prevent fuelpump runnin durin a wreck isnt activated by simply pressing the button -If button clicks its resetting itself, otherwise its ok. In article < -- If it backfires through the intake check for a lean condition, coolant temp sensor, vacuum leak etc. It it backfires through the exhaust it sounds like an ignition problem. J Blessing L1 Master Tech

I had the same problem with my 1986 Escort. They changed the EGR valve but that didn't fix the problem. They finally replaced an ignition solonoid (whatever that is) and it helped, though my Escort never really ran the same, especially in the cold. Sometimes I would even stall going 55 on the highway. I would have to ride the brakes and keep the accelerator pressed even when stopping. Not fun. I never did get the car to run normally (that is, the ford dealer never did) and I finally junked it. My suggestion: Next car don't go with Ford.

1997 MOnte Carlo does not start. I purchased it from a person on Craig's List, and I was able to drive it home from Muskegon to Grand Rapids, MI. It started smoking, so I changed the thermostat. After that I gave a man a jump, but it did not take. After that car would not start again once the car was shut off. The security light came on, and so I got a hold of Kool Chevrolet to get a new key. Key did not work, and car does not start. All lights and things work.
