    it is a distributorless engine with a coil pack. the coil itself is 385 dollars which i would rather be sure it is the problem before replacing.

DTC P0302 and P0306 means misfire condition that you description us, may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
* Faulty spark plug or wire
* Faulty coil (pack)
* Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
* Faulty fuel injector
* Burned exhaust valve
* Faulty catalytic converter(s)
* Running out of fuel
* Poor compression
* Defective computer

If you change the spark and plug wires, continue testing the other options; the possible solutions, if there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.

Or, if there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

Keep us updated.

Hi! You may want to try replacing the Distributor cap and rotor. They may be worn which can cause misfires to the engine. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

change the O2 sensors and if that doesnt work then its a new cat ,you can test the sensors first if you have a automotive test meter though its easy with the right gear ,the two wires with the same colour should read 12v heater circuit and the other two should read a variation from 8v to 12v depending on engine speed

Hi all, my 99 sub.350,300k,missfire #2

Have you checked the distr cap for cracks??

If plug is oily looking on brand new plug I would suspect worn rings, which would also explain the high PSI. (Motor job in the wind) Especially for 300K.

99 vw passat, when running, MIL lite, on car vibrates- shakes

no flashing light and rough shaking will be part of spark plug but also a very bad miss fire. I am going to guess that your engine is a 1.8t if so you have 4 coils that sit on top of your spark plugs that most likely are arcing you will need to figure out which coil is failing or you can save yourself the trouble and replace all 4 and the spark plugs. before you do that though check your wireing going to your coils look for broken wires or the ground that is next to the #1 coil that is the one closest to the front of the motor and you. hope that helps. that will be the start to fixing your issue also when you pull out the spark plug look down the hole first and make sure that there is not oil in the bottom of the hole if that is the case you will need a valve cover gasket as well. good luck hope that helps

1996 VW Passat - Random cylinder miss fire, worse

Pop the heed, see the air box on the very left? On top of that box is the Ignition Control Unit. Little black square w/ winds about 1/2"
thick....

That is the problem. Or Your MAF sensor...
I don't know how to chech the Ignition Control Unit with out the proper tester.

But the MAF is located directly below in side the box.
If you POP off the large hose that comes out of the front of the air box. You can see the MAF, spreay it some contact cleaner for electronics not BREAK CLEANER>>>>>>.

Regards
