I have a 2012 Rav4. I had my oil changed and I was told that my transmission fluid is black and smells burnt.I called Toyota I was told that my car's transmission never needed flushed.Is this true ?


It is a myth that trans mission oil never needs changing
All oils oxidise under extreme heat conditions ( and transmission oil reaches very hot temperatures) and bearings, bands and clutches do wear
again flushing is a general term incorrectly used
A transmission oil change generally removes the oil from the pan area but leaves 1/2 the torque converter with contaminated oil
That in turns re-contaminates the fresh oil
Flushing on the other hand is expensive as it require a considerable amount of new oil to do the job It is done with the engine running and fresh oil is drawn in as the old oil is pumped out
so you have to decide to have it changed or flushed as the difference can be in excess of $200.00 dollars BUT the results are also very different
Many manufacturers run sealed transmissions , for the sole purpose of preventing DIY people from putting in the wrong oil and so causing a problem in the transmission
remember that you most probably have a CV transmission

How to change Transmission Fluid


Changing Automatic Transmission Fluid.
For most cars, the Maintenance Tune Ups are scheduled at 30K, 60K, 90K and so on. Most of the dealers recommend to change the Transmission Oil and transmission oil filter at 60K. The transmission Oil can't last forever, so it is a good idea to take care for the transmission before something bad happens, and at 30K the transmission oil start breaking down. So you buy a transmission filter kit and start the job. Lift and secure your car. Loose and put pan bolts in a small cup with kerosene or WD-40. With finesse loose the transmission oil pan. Collect and disposal properly the used transmission oil. The amount could be 4 to 5 quarts. This is only the half. The rest is still inside the car. For now disregard the rest of the transmission oil. Focus on the oil pan. You have to clean inside and outside and check the magnet and residue. A black dust is normal. Replace the transmission filter. Just pull it out and snap in the new one. Don't forget that "O" ring sealer is in place. Clean out the surface of transmission block in contact with the pan. It is aluminum and don't tolerate even a scratch. A razor blade in right angle can do the job. Clean with lacquer thinner both surfaces in contact and the bolts. Dry out thoroughly. IF the oil pan is designed for a gasket, you are very lucky. Apply a thin layer of sealing agent, over the transmission oil pan edge, and position the gasket over it. Mount the pan on the transmission surface and torque the bolts at around 170 in- lbs. If the oil pan doesn't accept a gasket, Chrysler like this,than you are in trouble. You have to wait till the transmission oil drip stops.You need to wait overnight, till 24 hours. Clean everything thoroughly with lacquer thinner. Apply RTV around all holes and, create a gasket with sealer.Too much or too little means trouble. Mounting the pan you have to be very precise, one wrong move and you start again from the scratch. If there are big electrical harness obstacles, ask for a person to help. This happen to Chrysler Town & Country. Tight up the bolts with an extension only. Wait at least one hour and tight up to 150 in - lbs, or (12 ft - lbs). Wait at least 24 hours to cure, before filling up with transmission oil.You think are done. Not yet. You have a new filter, clean transmission oil pan, including the magnet, which must be cleaned and put back in place, but half of the transmission fluid is still old and dirty.
You have two options.
Fill out the transmission with new fluid, disconnect the return oil line at the transmission, or cooler, and collect 4 to 6 gallons and disposal the fluid properly. To do so you need to start engine and move the selector to reverse, neutral, drive and back to park. Connect the line and fill out the transmission with new fluid.
Option two.
Buy 6 to 8 feet vinyl clear house. Insert the house in the dip stick opening up to the bottom, and siphon the oil from transmission to a container positioned on the ground.
You need up to 24 hours to drain the oil. You have to repeat this procedure one more time after a month or so. You have to buy 10 quarts of transmission oil, but this is worth compared with a transmission repair. Keep in mind to buy the specific transmission oil for your car. Check the fluid level with the engine running and add as needed. Check after a week. If level is to high then siphon small amounts and fill up to the mark.

Should I change automatic transmission oil on my 2004 kia sedona?


forget the friends advice
automatic oil should be light tan or cherry red depending on the brand of oil used
the oil should be changed around the 60,000 klm mark and done by accredited transmission shops
If you have a CV-transmission that requires a special oil (not auto transmission oil as they are not automatic transmissions --they have a belt running between variable pulleys which gives the impression that it is automatic but it is not)

What would cause a transmission to malfunction?


Transmission can malfunction due to the following reasons:
- Before blaming the transmission, engine tune up be carried out to get the maximum performance and torque.
- Wrong type of transmission oil is used.
- Improper transmission fluid oil level.
- Contaminated transmission fluid.
- Transmission oil leakage.
- Throttle control cable adjustment. (Auto transmission)
- CVT oil calibration. (CVT).
- Clutch and pressure plate and clutch slippage. (Manual transmission).

Transmission


There are two types of transmissions in 1991 Toyota Corolla. Manual Transmission and Automatic Transmission.
1. Manual Transmission:
The transmission oil is checked through a level bolt which is provided to the left CV joint side in the middle of transmission. To check the oil level, park the car on a level floor, remove the level bolt with 22 mm or 24 mm spanner. If the oil starts coming out of this hole the oil level is considered OK. If not, top up the oil till it starts coming out and tighten the bolt. The recommended manual transmission oil grade is 75W/ 90W and total capacity is 2.4 Litres.

2. Automatic Transmission:
Warm up the engine, park the car on level floor, pull up the hand brake, gear lever stick in P, keep the engine start, let the radiator fan come on, take the auto-transmission stick out, wipe it with a clean dust free cloth, insert it in, again take it out, keep the stick in horizontal position and check the oil level. At operating temperature the auto-transmission oil level should be at upper level (Hot). If not, add oil to mach the mark. The recommended auto-transmission oil is Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Dexron II, and total (drain and refill) capacity is 1.4 Litres.

Oil in the cooling system


oil in the cooling system comes from a transmission oil cooler in the radiator leaking. I take it that you have an automatic transmission Normally if you have a gasket problem the water would be in the sump oil. You will need to replace the radiator to effectively fix the problem and as a side suggestion consider an air cooled transmission oil cooler for the transmission oil as it helps the car to run cooler and keeps the transmission oil cooler and extends the life of the transmission.

Transmission fluid level need regular top up and there is no external leak.Fluid color looks white.


If no external leak and the transmission fluid colour looks white, the problem belongs to the automatic gearbox oil cooler. The oil cooler has broke mixing the gearbox oil and coolant causing this milkshake. It's a small radiator core type oil / water heat exchanger. It is cracked inside and transmission oil is mixed with engine coolant. Because the transmission oil pressure is greater than engine coolant pressure, the transmission fluid level drops. See also the coolant colour inside recovery coolant reservoir inder bonnet! It could be like this:

Hello, I have a question concerning my recently purchase 2001 Honda Civic CVT. When purchased we added 1 liter transmission oil, not knowing it needed special transmission oil for CVT's. Other people...


Just drain the oil. DO NOT FLUSH TRANSMISSIONS especially continuous varible transmissions. thats why they won't garantee there work. replace with specified MUGEN oil. its the only oil designed specificaly for HONDA's, pluse mugen is honda's performance company.

How to replace transmission oil


to replace the oil on your transmission is not that hard but as a auto technician I should advice you that if on any vehicle the transmission oil has never been changed and is a high millage vehicle by changing the oil the transmission can slip or go neutral you should take your vehicle to a transmission shop and have the oil changed there with special oil changing machine that would clean the transmission and converter while it replaces the old oil and if there's a risk on damaging the transmission then they will tell you before changing the oil on your transmission and if they change the oil and any problems should happen then they are responsible for your transmission but if you insist to change it your self by removing the oil pan on the transmission you let all the oil out some of these Japanese vehicles have a drain plug you can take the brain plug out then remove the oil pan once you remove the oil pan then you'll see the transmission filter with socket wrench using a 10 mm socket remove the filter and the same way replace it with the new filter don't over tork the screws tighten to 15 lb. then remove the old oil pan gasket and make sure by doing all this process everything is extra clean, clean out oil pan and replace gasket and install oil pan then after you finish pour in 3 qt. of good quality transmission oil then turn on engine and take the shifter to R then D and last N and with engine on check the level and add as needed good luck
