I did a search and didn't see anything on this . Has anyone heard of an issue with the transmission on these vehicles. I took ours in for a irregular noise when the trans stepped down at idle and a hard shift, they found the old metal in the pan. I was at 61000 miles but they replaced the transmission under warranty anyway (still surprised because they got the corporate approval before they even called me). 61000 miles is very early with this vehicles reputation, just wondering if there was a known weakness or did I just get the one abberation.

I wonder if the trans is the same in the 2000 tundra, I had nearly the same problem. Toyota did replace the trans. at no cost for parts @ 65,000 miles. I paid apprx. 650.00 for labor only. I had hard shifting, then a stall problem then no trans. I am glad Toy. took care of it.

I think (not an authority) that the engine and tranny are the same between the Tundra and the Land Cruiser. I ask the question because it was out side the warranty but it was just so easy to get them to replace it I started thinking they might have a known problem so they thought it was easier to just take care of it. They listed it as a good will repair instead of warranty? Maybe there is a difference in their compensation from Corp. Toyota. Thanks for the answer, do you like the Tundra? I may be in the market later, moved from condo to house and my wife cringes when I throw home depot stuff in her SUV :-)

From what I've read in the latest Consumer Reports, (April '04), the Tundra and Sequoia share the same frame and drivetrain, which uses the 4 speed auto. tranny. The Land Cruiser uses a 5 speed auto, full time 4WD configuration.

Even with the bad trans. I am glad to own it. I have 97,000 miles on it. I pull a trailer and at times a tow behind manlift. It pulls great. Only left me stranded one time, bad trans. At 95,000 miles I did replace the passanger side front wheel bearing. I thought that unusual. I am used to those kinds of repairs as I have owned fords and chevys in the past. My first toy 4x4 p/u went 230,000 miles before I deemed to small for the work I did with it. I traded it in on the tundra. A nice improvement in comfort and power.

I am having trouble lifting the engine from the engine bay. I have everything disconnected, but there does not seem to be enough room to lift engine past the crossmember. Im not sure if the flywheel , or the right hand engine mount need to be removed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
