Sounds like your disc brake calipers are seizing up due to moisture in your brake fluid. If your pistons in the calipers are made of steel, you can either over-haul them, or replace them with a non-metallic piston to prevent this from happening.

A stuck proportioning valve will only prevent either the front or rear or corner / corner from working, it wont make them stick. More likely its one or more frozen brake caliper/s or a bad rubber brake hose/s or frozen brake cables etc.. Is it only front, rear, or both, one left, one right one side or all 4 ? You're gonna have to get the wheels off the ground even if only one at a time to check them. To determine if it is a bad rubber brake hose Crack open a bleeder screw. If the wheel then spins freely replace the hose. If it is still stuck then it is a stuck / frozen caliper, replace the caliper. In the case of rear drum brakes, you can checck the hose in the same way or if it's stuck cables you can try tugging hard on the cables to free them up some but otherwise you'll probably have to pull them apart and do a complete brake job including wheel cylinders.

Front end grinding noise

Several possibilities. Sound transmits through metal. The rear Emergency brakes will lose their lining and the linings fall into the rear brake drum. They will often pulverize the material and the piles of debris will shift when backing up and repeat the process going forward.
Rust on the front rotors. Constant battle. Can rust in 3 days enough to make noise. Sticking caliper or rubber brake hose is breaking down inside and blocking brake fluid return. Fluid has pressure to tighten caliper but relies on gravity/suction return. Rubber brake hoses internally can form flaps which act like 1 way gates.
Check other front axle for same parts, maybe 1/2 shaft is failing.

Brake pedal sticks

What you might try is a different abs unit as there is valving inside this assembly. Also what is often overlooked is the internal condition of the rubber brake hoses. Do the brakes release?

Consider that the force outward is over 3000psi to expand the brakes, but the system relies on gravity to return them. This means if the rubber inside the brake hoses collapses, it acts like one way valves and the fluid can not draw back.

You would need to find a pressure gauge and a "T" fitting and attach it to each wheel to see if the pressure is not going to zero after the foot pedal is released. But for the price, time, and bother, just replace the rubber component brake hoses.

There may be a rear hose block attached through the rear axle vent. The connection is a bit expensive and disconnecting the metal brakeline may be difficult. You could try the wheel hoses first.

Also, I have used a Vacuum handpump with a brake bleed adapter on it to do my brakes. The pressure gauge I mentioned could be put into a "T" fitting at the master cylinder to see where the pressure is at.

Just a note, some of the fittings at the ABS and at the rear axle block are different sizes. If you have to get into meal lines, you may find that even each end of the same metal line may have a different size nut.

I have a 1998 F150 4x2. When the breaks are engaged the truck comes to a stop.However, when u remove your foot the pedal does not return. the fluid is ok and the pads/shoes are new. If u pull the pedal...

Hello, This sounds like a bad Master cylinder or brake booster. I would try replacing the Master cylinder first as Power boosters rarely stick. Since the brake pads/shoes are new, the pedal must have returned to a neutral position when the brakes were bled.

There is 1 other possibility. Collapse of the rubber portion of the brake hoses. When the inside portion of the rubber brake hose deteriorates, the rubber acts like a one way flap or valve. You only have pressure exerted to the calipers or to the rear drums. The system relies on gravity once you release the pedal.

The collapsed hoses prevent the fluid from returning to the Master Cylinder. It would be unusual for all 4 brakelines to do this at one time. I would suggest you jack up each wheel when the brakes are locked and try to turn them. Remember to have the gearshift in Neutral and block some wheels for safety. You want the differential to allow you to turn the rear wheels.

Go check all the wheels, one by one, and you may find that only one wheel is keeping your truck from moving. That would be the wheel with the bad brake hose.

Check front end steering linkages for any play, as well as rear brakes for sticking or grabbing as well. Not unusual for a rear brake grabbing, to cause front end to want to wander.

88 t-bird non abs. the front brakes drag. i have replaced all rubber lines also new master cyl. new front brake calipers. rear brake hose preasure will bleed of after it has set for 15 to 20 min.can...

This is bizarre... I'm suspecting dirt in line(s). Are you bleeding correctly? Starting w/ Right rear, left rear, right front, then left front. You might try using a power bleeder also. A possible long shot, is brake proportioning valve sticking.

On my 93 e 150 van if i have to hit the brakes hard,say for a red light the left rear brakes start to drag and after 10 miles they start to smoke.had new brakes put on and checked emer cable,still same...

Possibly a wheel cylinder sticking. Also a possibility that the rubber brake hose in the rear is damaged internally. (This will normally cause both rear brakes to stick, however) The only other thing I can think of is weak return springs or a brake shoe catching in the groove of a badly worn backing plate.

You have a proportioning valve stuck. From the master the brake lines will run down the wheel well to another valve then out to the front calipers and rears when the prop valve sticks or freezes it then causes the rear or front system to lock up or not proportion the system evenly. 2. If that is not the case you may have contamination in the lines or the rubber brake hoses whick allow fluid to pass through it will not allow it to return almost acting like a back check valve therefore keeping you brakes on.

How difficult is it to replace the right rear caliper which is hanging out and ruining the rotors. Can a home garage mechanic easily fix this?

Do you mean the caliper is sticking?

Calipers are relativley easy to replace. If you are going to do the replacment yourself, I'd suggest buying a brake fluid hand vac (about $35) or the plastic bottle with the bleed hose (about $7). If you have an assistant to help bleed the air out of the line (once the caliper is replaced), stick a section of rubber hose over the bleeder valve then the other end in a jar with some brake fluid while pumping the pedal....this prevents air from being sucked back into the line.
