Problem for BMW 1990 3 Series
No low beams - 1990 3 series

A friend at work has a 1990 3 series that has developed an unusual
problem... his low beams won't come on. The high beams do work on all
four lamps, but no low beams. Also, his foglights only come on when the
high beams are enabled - instead of the usual on with lows, off with
highs. He also said that the overhead console computer shows nothing
wrong with the low beams.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where he need to look? He's tried
a few things but doesn't have an electrical manual, and my manual is for
my 1985, which is probably a bit changed in 5 years.

- Have 1993 BMW 325is and low beams suddenly stopped working. High beams work. All other lights front and back work. Please help. Nobody seems to be able to figure out without charging $100.00 just to supposedly "diagnose". Fusebox is confusing. I hope that's it's just a fuse !- BMWfanAug 06, 2008

Thanks Mark. He mentioned that he swapped out some relays, but I don't
know which ones. I copied the troubleshooting pages for the lights, and
hope it helps him. :)

check fuse first. if not that, the low beam bulbs need replacing. esspecially if all four come on when you cut-on the high-beams.

Your friend needs a high beam relay, K3 in the fuse box.
There aren't many significant electrical differences between 1985 and
1990, but the headlighting circuits did see some subtle changes.
