95 Saturn SC1 Transmission Problem??

shared by 2 users

I just took my car in to Saturn to be looked at. My regular mechanic
diagnosed a very bad tranmission problem afer actually having a specialist
come in and check out the transmission. This is after he did a preliminary
diagnosis of a transmission problem 3 months ago, but did not look in depth.

Three months ago Saturn decided the transmission was fine. They replaced a
valve and the car was o.k. for a while. Now they seem to think it's the
alternator. They wouldn't even look at my transmission last time and I
don't understand how our regular mechanic can diagnose a huge problem and
Saturn not even check it out.

My question is - Can I make them check the transmission? Would I have to
pay extra? It just doesn't make sense to me that one mechanic says our
transmission needs to be completely replaced and Saturn can replace an
alternator and it is now fine. Is the transmission that hard to detect
problems in?

An electrical problem like the alternator or battery can definitely cause transmission symptoms, but let me say,the Saturn TAAT automatic trans that is in your car has bores in the valvebody that wear out and cause extremely harsh engagements, delayed reverse engagements, and harsh upshifts while driving. The aftermarket solution is reaming the bores with a reamer, and installing Sonnax oversized valves that restore hydraulic integrity to those circuits. The hydraulic circuits are the Pressure Regulator bore, and Boost Valve and Sleeve bores and valves. That is the most common problem with the model trans in your car.

A bad alternator will mess up your transmission, as well. I don't know
how it does it, but it does. If your valve body was replaced in your
transmission, I would imagine that it IS your alternator.

I do not think that the "valve body" was replaced. It is listed as "a valve
and gasket". I could be wrong though.

The thing that gets me is that our mechanic says there is nothing wrong with
the alternator. He knew when he started looking at it that if it was a
major problem he would not be doing the work - we would take it to Saturn.
So he was not trying to overcharge us.

All the guy at Saturn will say is mechanics have a hard time figuring out
what is wrong with Saturn's and he won't look at the transmission because
his computer says nothing is wrong with it.

Anyway, we're having the alternator replaced and if the car runs okay then
great, but we will not be driving it anymore. We've decided to trade it in.
Let it be someone else's problem now and they can deal with it.

Easy- the tranny is controlled electronically, so as soon as the power
starts jumping,
everything will go off.

You didn't actually state what your problem is. However , why would you believe
a general mechanic over a dealership who only works on Saturns? Outside shops
very often misdiagnose , through no fault of their own, easy to fix Saturn
problems.
