Sebring runs great then just engine shuts off and tach goes to 0. Starts right back up usually. I thought it was in the distributor cap and rotor. I was told it probably was the fuel pump instead. It sounds right to me. Where is the fuel pum[

Well the fuel pump is in your tank , and you will have to remove your tank to replace it, when you replace it buy a good one and not a cheap one,the biggest enemy of fuel pumps is running you tank low on fuel because that fuel is what cools it,

Mech replaced fuel pump last Tues. Ran fine for 2-3 days of very little driving. Engine died again, so we replaced the fuel filter, Going home on highway, the engine died, tach to zero, and before my son could get pulled over, it started again. What now?

How to remove & install distributor on 1998 Suzuki jlx

answsered here 100s of times now, ok.
does the engine run now< and not fiddle by the wild bunch?
then that is very easy,
first mark all wires. 1,2,3,4 (1,3,4,2 ) is firing order
the rotor turns CCW (do not read GM book lies)
the front cylinder is #1
mark cap tower #1 (the front wire goes there)
  1. now remove cap (distributor)
  2. turn engine by hand until rotor points to #1 location.
  3. This is TDC #1 firing point. (see crank pulley notch at 0?)
  4. I also mark #1 on rim of dissy. (cuz, im careful) and (ask)
  5. remove the clamp bolt and side plug.
  6. pull dizzy out. (distributor slang)
  7. put new dizzy in, allowing for the 13tooth gears to mesh and turn and landing with rotor on #1 mark! . (3 tries, sure)
  8. set clamp bolt, plug in side plug.
  9. Cap back on wires same as before, do not scramble the wires.
  10. new rotor on installed wrong, cheap rotors are just that the install wrong, and never a BOSCH rotor , it fits 1 way only.
  11. The engine now starts.
  12. set static timing using the timing freeze jumper detailed below.
  13. open hood (usa,) look up,see that EPA sticker and timing spec, bingo.

covers all ways (vast) to mess it up, too, not just the simple replace.

good luck.

My 2000 Nissan frontier runs great for about 15 minutes then starts sputtering tach starts jumping. Changed distributor cap & rotor button plug wires fuel filter & crank shaft position sensor. What...

I would want to monitor fuel pressure as the engine warms up. But it could also be a coil or ignition module problem, even a relay.
Any chance the check engine light is on ?

Car starts when it wants to

Whens the last time it had a tune-up. You may have a bad cap or rotor, a bad module or a short somewhere.

My 99 chevy blazer 4x4 misses and shuts off some times back fires through the exhaust

Usually, an engine that backfires thru the exhaust is a sign of ignition problems.
Assuming you have the standard 4.3 V6, you should have a flat distributor cap and standard rotor.
I would start there.
The cap could be shorting out inside and making the coil fire the wrong plugs at the wrong time.
It could also be other issues with the distributor or the ign module.

95 GMC K1500 350... replaced distributor...timed it at 0 with computer unplugged... plugged it back in and timing changed by few degrees, engine surges and runs poorly. Checked plugwire route for...

ok ran great before changes. right. you say unpluged computor to set timing.. yes.. do you mean the plug on the firewall passenger side that looks like a fuse holder kindof..?? (set timing connector ) (tan /blk wire)
did it run good during timing proceedure??? wont be MAP that is engine vacume has nothing to do with what you have replaced.
proceedure is to set timing . shut off engine , plug in.. then restart.
yes timing moves as per ECM specs. check that timing did no get out one tooth when you replaced distributor. retime . restart

Someone took out the distributor

Remove sparkplugs, turn engine by hand to top dead center (when #1 piston is all the way up, full compression), look at distributor with the cap on it and rotor, align rotor to where #1 spark plug wire position, remove cap, remember or mark where rotor position is, then insert in engine, as in goes into slot, it will turn slightly, notice how far it moved asit went in, remove again and turn rotor back alittle so as to get it aligned to #1 position, once you got it close to were its on #1, see if there are old markings on the part of distributor shaft that may give you an idea where the clamp down piece made contact and set it there. tighten just enough to where you can rotate dirstributor by hand, put everything back together and try to start. play with distributor little at a time 'til it starts usually around halfway point.

What is the firing order for the 1994 ford taurus 3.8 engine, have just replaced cap and rotor, need order, thought I marked them but engine will not start. Perhaps I was wrong in the order.

Not trying to insult your intelligence, I'm going to get pretty basic here,

Looking at the Front of the engine, the spark plug order is 1, 2, 3, and 4. Front to back.

Looking at the distributor, it has two mounting screws for the distributor cap. One is close to the engine, the other screw is on the other side.

Looking at the distributor cap screw, on the Far side away from the engine, Number 1 spark plug is on the tower to the Left of it.

To the right of this distributor cap screw, is Number 2 spark plug tower.
The rotor turns clockwise.

Again, looking at the distributor from a top view, there is a distributor cap screw at the top, (Close to engine), and a distributor cap screw at the bottom.

Drawing an imaginary line from the top screw to the bottom screw, Number 1 spark plug wire goes to the Left, of the bottom mounting screw.

Firing Order is 1-3-4-2
The rotor turns Clockwise, (To the right)
