I have a 1990 F-150 and until the day before yesterday ran pretty good. But yesterday I put the key in turn one click electrical all comes on then continue to turn but with no resistance. Feels like nothing going on after that. I can't move the gears or start the vehicle.
-   I had the same problem yesterday. It was a broken slider (that connects the ignition lock to the accuator rod) inside the second cowl of the steering column.
I couldn't find a replacement part and it looked too difficult to get it out and a new one put in, so I got a steering column from the junk yard for $120. It took about an hour and a half to get the old one out and the new one in.

-   My truck starts but does not shut off. Like you said, it starts but then the switch has no effect.-   doug1228

From your descr, the switch assy has broken.
Guess you'll have to take it apart.

That would be called an actuator. There are two pieces to that set up. A lower and upper. These are connected together and to the ignition rod that actually pushes the starter switch on the lower steering column. It is driven by the lock cylinder by a small gear. In essence, when you turn the key, the gear moves the actuator, unlocks the anti-theft (can't get it out of park syndrome) connected to the ignition rod that pushes the starter switch. el lobo

That happened on my 90 F350. There is a rod in the steering column that has probably broken. This rod activates the starter switch down by the brake pedal assembly. I replaced the key assembly and found that was not the problem. After disassembling the steering column, found the problem. I would suggest you get a manual to help you through the process. Good luck.
