'92 Geo Metro squealing problem

shared by 3 users

By lawyer - usenet poster

I've got a '92 Metro, with about 82K miles on it, in pretty
decent shape. Over the last couple months, it's started
squealing first thing in the morning. Basically, it starts
when I put it in drive, and continues for about 3 miles
(sometimes more, sometimes less) - usually stopping after I've
slowed down (not necessarily with the brakes) a bit, then
sped back up.

I have no idea where to start looking. Any suggestions?

(BTW - I got talked into changing the CV joints on an 88
Oldsmobile next weekend - this shouldn't be terribly
difficult, right?)

THE PROBLEM COULD BE A LOOSE OR GLAZED BELT. THE BELT IS LOOSE AND AFTER
RUNNING ENGINE THE BELT EXPANDS AND TIGHTENS UP. THE BEST WAY TO TELL THIS
IS TO SQUIRT A PENETRATING SPRAY ON PULLY OR BELT AND START CAR IF NOISE
GOES AWAY, THEN CHANGE THE BELTS. IF NOT LOOK FOR OIL OR A CONTAMINATION
OF SOME KIND ON BELT,

Sounds to me like your alternator belt is slipping. Tighten or replace
it to stop the squeal.
good luck on the CV joints.

Check for loose or oil-contaminated belt first.
