"This is by design." Same problem here. I have a dual battery system with a voltage sensing switch. This was a big headache for me as I am an amateur radio operator. Here's what I found:The ECM (car computer) controls the alternator output in order to give the engine more power during acceleration. The red/white wire is labeled "generator gain" on the schematic. Manipulating this wire is supposed to cause constant charge. It was suggested on a forum that simply grounding this wire will bypass the ECM. My result was no charging at all. Disconnecting the ground returned it to normal and no damage was done. When the engine cools, I will try again but this time disconnect the side of the red/white wire to the ECM.

EDIT:
Disconnecting the wire defeats the ECM controlled voltage drop.

A sure fire way to test this is to simply turn on the parking lights. If the voltage drop goes away, you can be sure that the ECM is causing it.

1996 TROOPER (UX) AND RODEO (UC) VOLTMETER NEEDLE
    DROP DURING HARD/QUICK ACCELERATION
    AFFECTED VEHICLES
1996 Trooper (UX) and Rodeo (UC) models.
    SERVICE INFORMATION
On all affected vehicles, the instrument panel voltmeter needle will drop during hard/quick acceleration. This voltmeter needle drop is normal and is not indicative of a condition requiring repair.
1996 vehicles are equipped with an alternator that is designed to stop charging during certain engine speed modes in order to lessen engine load. At idle, the alternator will output approximately 14.3 volts. During a slow/steady acceleration, the alternator will remain at a 14.3 volt output. However, during a hard/quick acceleration, the alternator output will drop to 12.7 volts. The alternator will continue this 12.7 volt output, until the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects a drop in engine speed, at which time, it will return the alternator output to 14.3 volts.

The fault is in the voltage rectifier/regulator unit . The recitifer or the regulator can be short or weak and reduces the conversion. This unit must be changed as a whole if the voltage checck shows a weak increment on acceleration.

The usual cause for this to happen is either a loose or worn belt; or that the battery cables are dirty and need cleaned. To clean properly take the cables off and clean the ends and post with a wire brush or sand paper; then reattach and tighten.

I'll confirm what LegendLB said about the remanufactured alternators. I installed a reman into my '96 Isuzu and it did not work. The brake + battery light combo was still on. I haven't installed a new alternator yet, it will arrive in a week.

Also the voltage regulator can be going out but I seriously doubt that. When they do go out they register no charge at all at 99 percent of the time

low voltage pulling by what your saying it sounds like your alternator is about to give up seeing that it cant disperse elec. to other units so its draining off the battery

change out the voltage regulator they didnt change your alternator they just rebuilt it or did nothing it sounds like

voltage regulator = adjusts the voltage
some are built on the alternator and is replaced at once with new alternator
others look like a little fin like an amp usually black in color this you will see bolted on the fender right or left this is a voltage regulator

somtimes you get a bad alternator in box when it can be new this is a chance chance cause now most parts are remand.
i still believe its your alternator you either of several things
got ripped off
got a bad alternator in replacement or
you got a bad voltage regulator by itself
looks like this
