I need to know how to install the distributor rod(at what position and the position of piston) and the firing order send diagrams.

Turn the crank with # 1 plug out untill you are on the compr stroke ,allighn the timing mark to 0, drop dist in so that rotor is pointing at # 1 cyl ,you also need to allighn the oil pump slot with the slot on the dist . make sure the dist ha s seated all the way down . vacume advance will be on the pas side pointed at the front wheel . put cap on and start with # 1 go clockwise 18436572.

I have a ford 289 block I can't get it to fire on,

with the distributor at the rear of the block and looking at the front of the engine then pistons 1-3-5-7 are on your right hand with no 1 being the front piston. on your left will be 2-4-6-8 with no2 being the front piston. from the front and looking down on top of the distributor cap no 1 HT lead will be positioned at the 11 oclock position ( 12 oclock will be dead in line to the front of the engine). The rotor turns in an anti-clock wise direction Looking from the top . The firing order is 18436572 when installing the distributor ensure that the no1 piston is at TDC compression stroke

Remove distributor cap, make sure you unplug ignition coil...remove no. 1 spark plug. have someone bump key slowly while you put your finger where the plug will feel pressure push against your finger...when the pressure stops, your No. 1 piston is at top dead center, your rotor will be pointing to where your No. 1 plug wire should be. Place your distributor just above without installing . If not aligning place your No. 1 plug wire there.. , and use that as a starting point for your firing order....good luck !!! Hope this helps...

to put the distributor rotor to the correct firing side you have first know whether you are in the correct firing order position. For the sure action,follow the advise given below. A) remove the first spark plug.
B) remove the rocker cover where you easily see the tappets.C) start to rotate the crankshaft pulley on clockwise position and follow the tappets where the fourth piston valves come to balance where oncoming to this position means that you have the first piston into the firing position,the and then you have to put the distributor with the rotor facing into the first spark plug position. To be sure whether you are correct on the distributor put the distributor cap and mark it with a white tippex the first piston position. on fitting the distributor bring it into middle hole where the bolt will be tighten the distributor and on trying you will play with the advance timing or vice versa .

I need a diagram for the firing order on an AMC 304 motor

Firing Order: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. You should be able to find the order listed on the intake, just below the front of the carb.

Piston Numbering From Radiator To The Firewall:
Driverside: 1,3,5,7 (1 is closest to the radiator)
Passenger: 2,4,6,8 (2 is closest to the radiator)

Trace your #1 piston spark plug wire from the engine to the distributor. Firing order on the distributor is clockwise from #1.

Need to know the firing order for a 1982, 1.9 chevrolet S-10 four cylinder,and where is #1 on the distributor cap?

the firing order # is 1342, and the # 1 firing postion on the distributor cap should be at the 5 o clock position on the cap. this is according to the manual that i have. because the rotor turns counter clockwise. if you have any doubt, remove the #1 spark plug , and distributor cap , and bring the # 1 piston up on top dead center of the compression stroke, and the tip of the rotor will be facing the # 1 firing position.

What is the firing order diagram for 1972 delta oldsmobile

The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The distributor turns counter clockwise and #1 is at the 4 o'clock position on the cap. There should be 2 screws holding the cap on the distributor at 2 and 7 o'clock. Back up 2 positions from the 7 o'clock one for #1 piston. Hope this helps.

The firing order, which should be cast into the intake manifold, for the chevy small block V8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The firing order is the numerical sequence in which the spark plugs are fired. The insertion position of each spark plug wire around the circumference of the distributor cap can be found according to a clock face. The insertion sequence determines the firing order. The firing order is followed clockwise around the distributor cap starting from the 6:30 position with the 6:30 position being the number one cylinder spark plug wire.
On classic chevy small block engines that use ignition breaker points instead of electronic ignitions, the number one cylinder is the one immediately clockwise of the small metal sash cover on the distributor cap. The firing order starts here. There is no sash cover on the distributor cap for GM HEI electronic ignitions, and the firing order is the same, but starting at the 5:30 position.
The firing order makes sense if you know how the cylinders are numbered. The number one cylinder is the front most on the drivers side and 2 being the front most on the passenger side. From front to back, the cylinders are odd numbered on the drivers side, and even numbered on the passenger side.

the old fashioned way to check this is to remove your distribution cap and watch the position of your rotor arm to see which position it is for cylindar 1. then take out the spark plug for cylider one and use a light to see inside you should be able to see the piston move up and down throgh the hole, now the piston only goes down twice in one cycle so by cranking the engine round by hand you can correspond where the piton just starts to go down is the point of ignition so the rotor arm should be at the same point lined up with the spark lead for cylinder one inside the cap. if it mile off then cylinder 1 is at the top of the induction stroke, so crank round again until the piston starts to go down again. then you have the distributor arm at the right position, then follow round the cap the firing order for your engine. and then wire up the cap the same way.

Distributor Cap grey_line.gif Inspect | Replace The distributor cap should be removed for visual inspection. Check the cap for:


Inspect the distributor cap and rotor. Courtesy of American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
  • Distributor cap locating tab. This tab assures proper location of the cap onto the distributor housing.
  • Distributor cap holddown. The distributor cap must be securely attached to the distributor housing to prevent contamination and to assure its location.
  • Dirt and water in the cap. These contaminants will require additional voltage in order to fire the spark plug. If available voltage is not enough to overcome this resistance then no spark will occur at the spark plug.
  • Center carbon insert. All of the high voltage coming through the coil on its way to the spark plug must pass through this insert. Any additional resistance caused by wear or contamination can cause the engine not to start or to misfire.
  • Tower inserts. The inserts are made from aluminum or bass so it is possible for them to oxidize. Aluminum oxide is an abrasive that can cause excessive damage to the distributor. If the insert is made from brass then the oxidation will appear green in color.
  • Cracks. If any cracks are present on the distributor cap then replacement of the part is required.
  • Carbon tracking. Carbon tracking indicates that the high-voltage of electricity has found a low-resistance conductive path over or through the plastic. The result is a cylinder that fires at the wrong time, or a misfire.
Also check for:
  • Physical or electrical damage is easily recognizable.
  • Electrical damage from high voltage can include corroded or burned metal terminals and carbon tracking inside distributor caps.


Things to look for when inspecting a distributor cap.
  • If the distributor cap has a mild buildup of dirt or corrosion, it should be cleaned. If it cannot be cleaned up, it should be replaced. Small round brushes are available to clean cap terminals.
  • Wipe the cap and with a clean shop towel, but avoid cleaning these components in solvent or blowing them off with compressed air, which may contain moisture. Cleaning these components with solvent or compressed air may result in high-voltage leaks.
  • Check the distributor cap and housing vents. Make sure they are not blocked or clogged. If they are, the internal ignition module will overheat. It is good practice to check these vents whenever a module is replaced.
Replace Distributor cap replacement instructions vary, so always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
General replacement procedures are as follows:
  • For spring-loaded caps, unsnap the clips and remove the cap. When installing the new cap, make sure the clips are snapped back into place.
  • For spring-loaded j-hook caps, push down and turn. It will unlock. Lift up to remove it. Position the new cap in place, then push down and turn to lock.
  • For caps with screws, use a screwdriver to loosen the two screws. Install the new cap and use the screwdriver to tighten the screws. Don't overtighten.
It is a good idea when replacing the distributor cap to remove the cap with the ignition wires attached. After you have installed the new cap, transfer the wires one by one onto the cap in their correct position. This way the firing order is accurate. If, for some reason after you replace the distributor cap, your vehicle does not function normally, check your firing sequence.
The distributor cap is mounted on top of the distributor assembly and an alignment notch in the cap fits over a matching lug on the housing. Therefore the cap can only be installed in one position, which assures the correct firing sequence. There is a tab or notch somewhere on the distributor body that must align somewhere on the distributor body that must align with a corresponding tab or notch in the cap. Once again, do not force something.
The rotor should be inspected and/or replaced when the distributor cap is replaced.

Firing Order Each cylinder of an engine must produce power once in every 720 degrees of crankshaft rotation. Each cylinder must have a power stroke at its own appropriate time during the rotation. To make this possible, the pistons and rods are arranged in a precise fashion. This is called the engine's firing order. The firing order is arranged to reduce rocking and imbalance problems. Because the potential for this rocking is determined by the design and construction of the engine, the firing order varies from engine to engine. Vehicle manufacturers simplify cylinder identification by numbering each cylinder.


Examples of typical firing order.
Regardless of the particular firing order used, the #1 cylinder always starts the firing order, with the rest of the cylinders following in a fixed sequence. The ignition system must be able to monitor the rotation of the crankshaft and the relative position of each piston to determine which piston is on its compression stroke. It must also be able to deliver a high-voltage surge to each cylinder at the proper time during its compression stroke. How the ignition system does these things depends on the design of the system.
