Question about Chevrolet S 10

1 Answer

Have 1998 s10 LS, automatic, 2 wd, 2.2L. Replaced the coils recently due to miss fire problem. Thought perhaps this would also possible solve the voltmeter registering negative charge during operation. Did not and now something is draining the battery. I have replaced the battery and the starter. Don't want to change the alternator until I can be sure this is not due to a dead short somewhere. Any ideas as to where to start and what to look for would be most appreciated.

First test the alternator. This is tested by revving up the engine and reading volts with multimeter across battery terminals. The voltage should be at least 13.5 V or the alternator is shot.

Also ensure that the alternator belt is well in tension and not worn.

If the alternator is good, then the problem is a parasitic drain. This is a fault that is often difficult to find (for that reason there are car electricians). The fault is found testing continuity and volts in different points.
Here a broad description of how to:Power parasitic drain.

My 1998 s10 is misfiring really bad what's the possible cause?

Misfires could be one of a number of items. Questions you need to ask yourself are: When did I do a tune up last? (spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor) If you have had these replaced recently then you need to check to ensure it is getting proper amounts of fuel, on these newer s10's they are equipped with a vortec injector system which is a module inside the intake that runs 6 to 8 plastic lines to each cylinder depending on motor size. The common problem for these injector systems is that the plastic lines tend to lay on top of each other inside the intake and as the motor is running they rub together. After years of this they finally rub holes into each other and and dump fuel into the intake causing a miss fire or rich condition. Those are common problems I have seen on those s10's. I hope that helps you figure it out.

Have they replaced the coil on #5?? There are no plug wires on this motor. They have ignition coils mounted atop the sparkplugs called COPs. If a misfire is still detected, possible coil malf or cam or crank sensor malf. Hopefully this helps

Your firing order is 1-3-4-2. There are 2 ignition coils under the cover sitting on top of the engine. One coil fires cylinders 1 and 4. The other fires cylinders 2 and 3.
