I am considering buying an 87-91 F150 4WD, and I was wondering if anyone knows of any problems with these trucks that I should be aware of or look out for.
I will be definitely getting a 5spd and most likely the 6 cyl.
i have an 88 f150 L6 300cid its a damn solid truck it will hold up for anything everything is original and is still kickin !@# at 166k and they were all hard miles but do get manual hubs

Automatic hubs and clutchs have caused problems. If you buy one with manual hubs and the clutch has been replaced and has less than 50K miles on it you will probably get a reliable truck. There may be diagreement on the clutch issue but I'm basing it on two friends with Fords of that era. One friends truck took the first clutch at 50K but the replacement has been holding up fine.

I have a '91 F150 4WD, 302, M5OD, 110k miles.
If you go for a V-8, watch for broken exhaust manifolds (one of mine broke right in half), rotted out oil pans, and broken catalytic converters.
All of the u-joints are a problem, including the front axle joints. The brake calipers generally suck, although mine have been OK. Problems with the rear brakes were corrected by trashing the factory shoes. The self adjusters also rotted off on both sides. Watch out for rusted brake lines, too.
No problems with the transmission or clutch. I ended up changing the clutch at 97,000 because I had the truck apart and the engine jacked up, but there was plenty of lining left and the pressure plate was fine.
The only rust I have is on the hood and tailgate. The paint sucks.

In article < says...
I had an 87 4x4 with the 300 cid six and a 4 speed manual. No problems with engine (except solid state ignition module replaced) or clutch or trans at 98K miles.
All universal joints replaced twice. Much work to keep rust under control here in New Hanpshire. Both fuel tanks rusted out as well as fuel pumps (all three, 2 low pressure and the high pressure). Front end alignment was always poor, led to tire wear. Otherwise, the usual exaust and brake replacements.
Truck always ran well except for when the ignition module went.

we converted my motor to carberated because the fuel injection messed up and then the rear seal went out and the new "ones" would not seal. we put a new crankshaft in and the new rear main seal still won't seal. we put a bellhousing (no transmission attached) on so we could mount the starter and we started it up and it ran perfect and didn't leak and then we put the transmission on and it leaked and we had to hold it at half throttle to keep it running
