1986 Jetta recall

By paulrmc - usenet poster

I have an 1986 Jetta diesel and just today while reading this group
noticed that there was a recall on the heater core in 1992. There is a
slight clouding of the windshield with the defrost on full, and that
makes me a bit nervous. Do these recalls have a time limit on them (i.e.
Am I too late?) and if not, how do I know if my car went in for the recall
(I've only had it 8 months)? Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure there is no time limit on them. If you take your car
to a dealer, he should be able to put the VIN into the computer and
see if the recall work was performed on the car or not.

1992? If that's the same recall that my '86 GLI went in for, VW sent me
a notice just last year for it - guess it had never been done yet.
Seems to indicate no time limit. I got it done right away because my
car has a <lot I could get it done for free, why not?

Matt is right below, I had a friend in Colorado who bought a 1986 Jetta
and found out the below recall had never been done. He just took it in
last month for the heater core change out at the dealership. So you
should have no problem. Go to http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/
for information on recalls and TSBs. Here is the recall below:

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 92V050000
Component: HEATER:WATER:DEFROSTER:DEFOGGER:HEATER CORE:WATER
Manufacturer: VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA,INC
Mfg. Campaign #: SD
Year: 1986
Make: VOLKSWAGEN
Model: JETTA
Manufactured From: AUG 1984 To: JAN 1990
Year of Recall: '92
Type of Report: Vehicle
Summary:

THE END CAP CONNECTING THE HEAT EXCHANGER'S CORE TO THE ENGINE COOLING
SYSTEM COULD RUPTURE AND ALLOW HOT COOLANT TO ESCAPE INTO THE PASSENGER
COMPARTMENT.

THE COOLANT ESCAPING INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT COULDCONTACT THE
DRIVER'S FEET AND INJURE THE DRIVER. ALSO, STEAM FROM THE HEATEDLIQUID
WILL CLOUD ON THE WINDOW SURFACES AND IMPAIR THE DRIVER'S VISION AND
COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

REPLACE THE HEATER CORE WITH AN IMPROVED HEATER CORE.

SYSTEM: WATER HEATER; HEATER CORE.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER AUTOMOBILES.

Also, for Jonathan below, don't wait to get this done...the heater core
could fail (may or may not) and not only impair your vision by fogging
up your windshield, but spill hot fluid onto your feet while driving...

The problem with the heater core is that there is a plug in the core
that lets go and sends hot coolant flying. About a week after my '86
Golf blew hot water over my lower right leg I got a notice telling me
that this might happen. Poor timing.

CAUTION!!
When I had this done, I believe the local VW dealer screwed up the air
conditioner by not removing the evaporator (which the book says you MUST
do to replace the heater core) and forcing his way in there, causing a
slow leak. Unfortunately, mine was done in the fall and it wasn't until
spring that I found that I had no A/C and by then the dealer would have
nothing to do with me. I later found out that it took two to three weeks
for the R12 to leak down to where the A/C would not come on.

Actually all the books are wrong, I did my heater core when it went 2 years
after they did the recall. I had to do nothing with the AC evaportator, which
both my books, Bently and Hayes, say you must. The leak probably was caused by
something else.

I have a 1999 A3 Jetta TDI which has developed a strange problem and the
dealer (and the VW helpline) is baffled. The engine surges at 1500 rpm when
cold. This normally happens in a parking lot and is very annoying. The
computer, intake manifold and most sensors have been changed, but to no
avail.
PLEASE help me (and the dealer).

I assume you are at high altitude. If so, then the critical information is that
the Turbocharger becomes "active" at about 1,500 r.p.m. If you are at low altitude,
then the engine does "O.K." with normal air pressure, and the surge is minor. If you
are at high altitude on the other hand, then the surge as the engine suddenly gets
"all the air it needs" can be substantial. [I live on the Atlantic Coast, but have been
known to visit relatives in Colorado, where the surge is substantial.]
