Problem for Volkswagen 1994 Passat

Re : Smells from the Air-conditioner

Every morning when I switch on the air-con, I get this musky-smelling smell
(fungus??) that lasts for
a few seconds. The air is also very hot & humid each time I return to the
car, say during lunch. Also, I
notice that condensed water from the bottom of the car is rather less than
other cars I observed.
Appreciate if anyone can help. Thanks.

Could be a couple of things. Could be the drain valve for the
evaporator
is clogged. That would explain the lack of water draining that you
mentioned.

Could also be a slight coolant leak in the heater core or hoses. Losing
any coolant?

You're right, there's something growing in there. Best solution, other
than disassembling the whole thing, is to fix the source of the
moisture,
then while the HVAC fan is running at high speed, spray some Lysol or
equivalent into the HVAC intake. That'll kill off the stuff that's
growing.
Might take a couple applications.

Another possibility is that you just need to clean out the intake for
the
HVAC. My '95 got a bunch of leaves, etc, caught in the area in and
around
the intake screen. After awhile it got pretty funky. Cleaned it all
out
and sprayed in the Lysol. No more funk.

Good luck,
Mark

There is a cabin air filter on the passenger side of the cowl under the hood. It could be the problem if it got wet and moldy. It's under a plastic cover at the base of the winshield between the right hood hinge and the battery.

I had a musky smell in my B6 Passat recently. I pulled out the pollen filter under the glove box area and replaced it with a new pollen filter. Before you know it...smell is all gone.

As for the water build up...I'd check the drainage tube like suggested earlier.
