RADIO INTERFERENCE IN BMW'S

By Grant - usenet poster

" "
A co worker just bought a used 2003 BMW 525I There is a sticker in the
upper left portion of the windshield cautioning about using cell phones, ham
or cb radios in the BMW without an outside antenna. She indicated that she
had a friend that had electrical problems when they used a cell phone in a
745.

I am looking at getting a new 330 CI. Should I be concerned about RFI
(Radio Frequency interference or damage?) What experiences have owners had?

Also, have any of the Force Break display 330's hit the USA west coast yet?

Thanks in advance...

Yes, I could see the problem with a higher powered ham or cb radio, but a
hand held cell is only a little over a 1/2 watt. Lets see what others say!
Thanks for the help!

Fear not ! I have run an Icom 706 and Icom 7000 in the car, using 50 watts FM, 100 watts AM and SSB. Make sure you run all cables to the battery in the trunk (fused, natch). The sticker is because your car has a digital trunk, and cutting a wire, looking for voltage, is very risky. The stereo guys go nuts trying to do installs.

Just make sure everything's properly grounded. There is a small whine, sounds like alternator but is from the digital trunk. It goes away over 1800 rpms.

There isn't such a sticker on my 2003 325. As for the other things, I would
believe that you
should install an antenna for a device like a cb radio or ham radio. They
do broadcast a significant amount
of power, and they are very intolerant of impedance mismatches.

I don't need any of those things so can't say about whatever RFI they might
experience. I would observe that
the idrive on a 745 might make it more likely to see RFI.

I may not have one of the fancy pants new ones, but the owner's manual of my
1998 E39 540iA said something to the same effect. I have never experienced
any interference, expect locking the car (i.e. with the key. locking it with
the central locking button and driving around is fine) with a turned on cell
phone inside tends to set off the alarm.

I've used a Motorola V60 cell phone in '03 & '04 325's, 330's, 530's and
745's with no problems. If anything would have had a problem I would have
expected to see issues in the 745's because of I-drive. But nothing
unexpected happened.

CB or Ham radios are a separate manner because they'll have much more
power than a cell phone.

The instructions said to use Windows 98 or better, so I installed RedHat.
