Parking brake problem

By Bomber - usenet poster

" "
I have a 2002 Silverado and the parking brake goes right to the floor and
does not hold the truck. The dealer says this is normal and they cannot
adjust it any more. There is about 25,000 km on the truck. Is this a bunch
of BS or is Chevrolet really that stupid in designing a parking brake that
cannot be made to work? Thanks for any help.

Find another dealership for your warranty work. He's full of s**t. There
is no way a parking brake being that loose and unable to hold the truck is
normal.

The same thing happened to me. They need to pull the rear wheels and
adjust the miniature brake drum (yes I know these trucks are 4 wheel
disc). There is an adjuster wheel just like the older drum brakes that
needs to be adjusted and all will be fine. My dealership tried to charge
me for the adjustment while under warranty even though it was like that
from day 1. I told them to shove it and went to my local tire shop where
we buy lots of tires from, and they did it for free. Not too big of a
job to do yourself. I hate these lazy fucking dealers that want your
business when it is time to buy a truck, but give you a line of bull
when you have a problem.

I had the same problem on my 02 Suburban (21K miles)- pb pedal goes to floor
and does not hold (discovered this while parking on a hill). Dealer had to
adjust the brakes themselves, not just the parking brake pedal/cable
mechanism. Now, it still goes to the floor, or nearly so, but holds. I
recently drove an even newer Suburban (8,000 mi) and it's parking brake
behaved exactly the same as mine - goes to the floor and feels like it might
not be holding (because you never feel the parking brake "grab"), but it
does indeed hold. It really doesn't feel right, but evidently, this is the
way it is. I'm interested in hearing what others say.

PS: they did not charge for this adjusment / repair. I didn't buy the car
from them, so I have to assume it was covered by warranty.

Could also be a broken cable. That is not how a parking brake is suppose to work.
