Problem for BMW 1988 5 Series
BMW electrical problem, help?

I've got a 1990 525i. I intermittently would lose power to the
following all at once. Power windows, central locks, stereo, mileage
computer, sunroof. Now none of them have worked for two days. I've
changed the battery and checked the fuses to no avail. The rest of the
electrical is fine, (lights,indicators,a/c,fan/mirrors) Any ideas
would be appreciated. I can't get an appointment at the dealer for two
weeks.

- I have a 95 325is and the driver side window doesn't want to go up all the way when the button is depressed, it starts up then goes down, stops, goes up, then stops. Last evening I had just started the car and the passenger window started, like it was possessed. i have a 1988 bmw and the speedometer and all the gages dont work...i lost the manuel book so how do i check the fuses to see which one is the problem... im missin alot of fuses from the car????

check it out.
If I were you,I would check for a bad relay or bad connection at the relay
plug.
A working relay will 'click' when it is closed.This closing of contacts will
allow current to flow to the devices it controls.Check for power to and from
each fuse.Turn key on and check fuse or fuses that are inline w/ the disabled
items.Make sure your getting power TO the fuse(s),as well as from the fuses.
Look in the service book and find out which relay conrols power to these items.
Turn on the key,and the relay sould click shut. your sunroof etc. should work.
IF it does'nt click,move it around a little,checking for a bad connection.you
could even get a relay used from a BMW wrecker
and install it .If everything works,you fixed it.Relays are on the fuse block
or on the relay block under the right side of dash.(1988 5 series)1990 check
the book.Join a BMW club-they can be
very helpful.The dealer can ream you.
A flooded BMW restorer
P.S. get a test light5.00 or so

I had the same problem with my 1990 525i. I would intermittently loose power to my windows, seats, radio, clocks, mileage, and etc. I checked the fuses and the relays and neither were the problem. I took it to the shop and found that the problem was in the ignition switch. They replaced the ignition switch and I haven't had a problem since. This was relatively inexpensive ( a little over $200) repair work.

Hi
My 1999 323i automatically opens all windows and sunroof during the night. I come out in the morning to a completely opened vehicle. This has happened several times. During these opened times there is also trouble locking the car...the windows open again.

I have the identical problem with the electricals (interior lights, central locks,radio, windows, mirrors) going out. The A/C and lights are OK. As a temporary solution, removing the modules - both under the rear seat & the engine compartment - and reseating them solves the problem temporarily. I have not figured out exactly which module is the culprit as yet.

I have a 1997 BMW Z3 Roadster. It turns over and is getting spark and fuel, but won't start. The stereo was stolen, and i am wondering if that messed up some wiring? There is also some kind of electrical looking plug that says made in Germany hanging down by the gas pedal. I have followed the wires and can't figure out what it is for.
