Actually this is a common problem and an easy fix. It is usually a safety switch located under the brake pedal. When you press the brake pedal, you engage the switch allowing the shifter to move. Most local parts store has the safety switch in stock

My acura gets stuck in park it's a 1999

are you on flat ground? are brakes free of ice. and wheel not stuck
against a curb? if on flat ground release hand brake, to make this more easy. if on a hill, say so and post. for answers.

this is a feature,,,, (it's failing.) and runs off brakes.
its called the PARK lock out , feature, most older cars
have bypass port, on the console, new cars this idea is illegal.
this is covered in you operators guide, lost that?
the console has either a hidden or side port, a cover of sorts.
or has a key slot that is for Bypass. All A/T owners must learn to use this , so when this happens you are not stranded, RTM
yes, read the manual, see the page on starting a A/T car?

this is just one fail path there are others.
the shifter release botton.
the tranny dont want to exit park (inside)
the cable is seized.
some have a cable to the ignition switch, that can fail.
if the bypass fails, then post. for steps to isolate true case.

Shifter on 95 buick riviera stuck in park

There is a "park lock cable" located in the steering column that releases the shifter after the ignition switch is turned to the on position. There is also a BTSI (brake trans shift interlock) solenoid that also releases the shifter when you press on the brake pedal. One of them is not functioning, are you able to turn the steering wheel after the car is started?

It is stuck in park I have removed the bezel and the center console cover but can't get the part surounding the gear shift off ( where it says park drive etc. ) Any suggestions about what to do

The issue may not be the shifter assembly itself. This is really one of those issues to have a shop take a look at it as there could be something else in the safety features of the vehicle causing it to not come out of park (for example, on my old 1997 F-150, the brake switch wire severed and caused the truck to become stuck in park. Why does that matter? Because, if the truck, as a safety feature, does not know the brake pedal is pressed, it doesn't let the vehicle come out of park).
It could also be a bad range selector sensor on the transmission, however, I'm not sure if these Pacifica's are equipped with them or not or if they have a straight cable from the shifter assembly to the transmission set up.

1992 mercury xr-7, shifter is hung up in park, I believe you have to have your foot on the brake to disenage. with my foot on brake pedal botton on shifter will not press in to move shifter out of park....

Hello, Check out the top part of your brake pedal lever. The switch that makes the shifter release can be broken or knocked out of position. You will notice the Brake lights are probably not working either. Once you get the brake lights to work, the shifter should work.

Gear locks when i park on even a slight incline

ALWAYS engage the Parking Brake BEFORE putting car into "Park". When you want to get out of "Park", put your foot on the brake pedal, move gear shifter into desired gear, THEN take down Parking Brake. If you get stuck (gear shifter doesn't move), then try the "rocking" method (recruit 1 or 2 folks to push your car from behind while you try to move gear shifter into desired gear). Good luck!
