A freeze plug may be leaking at the rear of the engine block, just ahead of the flexplate and the converter. This is a major repair job to relace a plug that costs very little compared to the labor. If you plan to use it a lot ,better to remove the engine and replace all of them. Otherwise you can try some stop leak, but use the truck expecting more leaks, not a permanent fix.

1997 exploer wont come out of park

Usually the brake switch or the solenoid that locks the shifter in park.
Someone would need to check the solenoid with a meter.
Also could have tension on the shifter such as parking on a steep hill.

1997 ford taurus stuck in park

Is it on a steep incline, if so it will have to be pushed the opposite direction that gravity is pulling on it. ie if headed up hill push from rear. If it is on a level it is probably in the ignition key position that has it locked out. Jiggle the ignition while trying to take it out of park. Also some models requite the brake to be pressed down. Check and see that the switch on the brake that is associated with the transmission selector is not faulty or misaligned. If that fails it will probably have to go into the shop. Hope one of these works, the position of the ignition is one of the worst causes of transmission selector problems across all cars.

It sounds like the cylinder head gasket is leaking internally, forcing coolant into the combustion chamber and getting burnt off through the exhaust. Check the tailpipe for excessive white smoke while the car is running.

My car will not shift out of park. It drove fine the day before and had no problems, but I cannot get it out of park today. It starts up just fine and I have brake lights that work. Any suggestions as...

The first thing to check is whether you are parked on a steep hill or partially up a curb. Sometimes, if the weight of the car is getting pushed hard enough against the parking mechanism, it will be almost impossible to get out of park.
If this might be the problem, see if you can get someone to rock the car forward and backward while you try to get it out of park.

Smoking auto tranny

I had a similar problem with my ford 1/2 ton pulling a trailer on a grade against the wind on hot day. thought I completely fried the tranny. Let it cool off, continued the trip and drove the truck for years with no more problems. Can't explain how your dip stick was dry however. The dipstick should have been wet with foamed trans oil.

If the car is parked facing down a hill and you must shift into reverse, it will not stay in reverse and sometimes won't go into reverse at all. What kind of tranny fluid does ford recommend?

Does the shifter move or are you holding the car by the parking pawl in the trans. You should be using the parking brake on a hill. Is the trans low on fluid, because it is leaking or you just do no know? Mercon V on the fluid.
