Problem for Volkswagen 1988 Golf

88 Golf shudder when accelerating

Hi all,

I've got an 88 golf, 1.8 litre with fuel injection (one injector per
cylinder). It starts OK, idles OK and all that but when you drive it in
third or fourth and come down in the speed, it suddenly starts to
shudder badly. If hit the gas, the problem goes away. Here's what I've
looked at/done:

* Timing
* New plugs
* Disassembled distributor and checked the centrifical timing advance
* Cleaned air mass meter assembly and the wire filter on air intake

None of these things seemed to make any difference. When it starts to
shudder, its very sharp so it almost feels like its an electrical
problem. Does anybody have any ideas on this one?

Thanks,

Mark

it may be a vacuum leak in the intake tube(check for tears) or intake manifold

as some one has said the sensor that goes into the block can cause this problem and also there is a sensor on your throttle body chech the wires and connections on there can cause it if broken wires or dirty points on connector from my experience

With my 87 Golf, when it would shudder, if it did it at no-load, like
just as you let off the throttle on the freeway, then it was my final
drive in the tranny. If it shuddered under strong acceleration, it was
my control arm bushings.
Can you get it to shudder without driving it? If not, then I wouldn't
suspect the engine...if it only does it out on the road, I'd suspect
suspension stuff.
Anyway, just my experience:)

Broke,

Thanks for your reply. I can't get it to shudder when it's not on the
road but it does hesitate quite a lot when you floor it. The shudder is
very sharp and rapid, which is why I'm thinking its coming from the
engine. It also seems to be worse when its cold than after it warms up.
If you've been driving it for a while at higher speeds, it can actually
take a while to start shuddering at lower speeds. If it were
mechanical, I would expect it to shudder at the same speeds
irrespective of whether it was really warmed up or not.

The Haynes manual I bought was supposed to cover this model but the
injection system they describe looks nothing like what I've got. I
ended up looking in my Chilton's manual for my 93 diesel golf (which
also covered the petrol models) and it seems the 88 golf has the
injection system from the later model. I guess the Germans were trying
it out a little earlier The Chiltons tells me how to test some of
the electronics on the injection system so I'll take a look at that and
see if I can uncover anything there.

Thanks,

Mark

You should pick up a Bentley manual to go along with your
collection...I've found it to be priceless.
With the problem being affected by temps, I would rule out suspension
too:)
Does it feel like it is quickly running out of gas then catching
again? Possibly a clogged fuel filter, or bad injector.
Anyway, good luck on the hunt!

My '87 is doing the same thing I tested and cleaned the sensor under the
upper radiator hose that goes into the block(its the injector temp. sensor
tell the inj. system that to do) Works like a charm.
