not easy without the proper tools, best to call a locksmith that has the right tools or you can do damage that will cost more than the locksmith did.

you need to take the interor panel off and take a look the latch. the connecting rod from the outside handle to the the lock most likely is the problem.

I have a similar issue on a 2001 Jetta sedan. jandkat seems to be talking about the old system that VW used (pre-1998). To my knowledge there is no vacuum-based locks in the 2001 models. I've had the door completely apart and there are defiantly not any vacuum hoses. The only 100% for sure fix I have found is to replace the door latch mechanism. There are some other options but I'm not sure they would completely fix the issues you are having. Now for the bad news: you can only get this door latch mechanism from VW dealers. I have yet to find a place online or elsewhere that carries them. They are around $185 for the latching mechanism and if you don't want to install it, be prepared to pay another $200 or so in labor. If you do want to do it yourself, here is a great site that has step-by-step how to take a VW door apart: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1015107
Hope this helps
