ANy way not to use the hoist? I have the directions from the repair manual but was looking for an easier, shorter way to do the job. I don't have a hoist. Will be doing the work in my garage. Thanks.

Hi,

Although our RL is FWD, the V6 engine is mounted in the engine bay the same as RWD. So the starter is located on the back side of the engine bay. You cannot even see it without a significant tear down the parts. Any mechanic will charge you more than $500 for the job wherever you go.

There are two way to replace (access) starter. First is involved to lift engine slightly with chain. Second is disassemble most parts of driver side front axle including, drive side front wheel, CV,inner & outer tie-end rods, rack and pinion, etc.

Double or triple check whether it is really the starter problem. It may be a main fuel relay, starter relay, ignition relay, ignition switch or simply battery.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

Hi, follow your positive battery cable,it is connected to your starter. Here are your instructions how to replace;3.5L Engine; This procedure requires the use of an engine hoist to lift the engine slightly.

  1. Obtain the radio anti-theft code if applicable.
  2. Disconnect the negative, then the positive battery cable.
  3. Lift the coolant reservoir out of the way, then remove the battery and battery base.
  4. Remove the alternator and belt.
  5. Remove the left exhaust manifold cover from the engine assembly.
  6. Remove the damper fork.
  7. Disconnect the left lower ball joint from the suspension.
  8. Remove the left drive shaft from the hub and transaxle assemblies.
  9. Remove the transmission stop collar.
  10. Remove the exhaust system Y-pipe.
  11. Remove the front motor mounting bolts.
  12. Attach a suitable engine hoist and slightly lift the engine.
  13. Remove the motor mount.
  14. Disconnect the starter cable from the attaching stud and black/white wire.
  15. Remove the starter. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) idle memory must be reset after reconnecting the battery. Start the engine and hold it at 3000 rpm until the cooling fan comes on. Then allow the engine to idle for about five minutes with all accessories OFF and with the transmission in Park or Neutral.
    1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

Upon installation of the starter cable and the black/white wire, make sure that the crimped side of the connector is facing up.
    1. Enter the anti-theft code for the radio

since youve said that al other checks were good then im lead to believe that the ignighter is bad usually you can find this under the dist.cap you will have to take the cap off remove the coil and this will give you access to the ignighter pull it up and out disconnect the wire harness and replace with a new one.
