Might be your gauge , have you check the resistance on it at Full 1/2 and empty and see where your tank volume is at??

also might be your instrument cluster

I have a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis Ls with a fuel gauge that does not work (gauge may be reversed)??? help please.

The fuel level indicating system is a magnetic type system, which consists of the sending unit located in the fuel tank, an anti-slosh module located on the back of the instrument cluster, and a fuel gauge located in the instrument cluster. The sending unit changes resistance according to the level of fuel in the fuel tank, which varies the current flow through the gauge. The pointer position varies proportionately to the current flow. In this system, the sending unit resistance is low (22 ohms) when the fuel level is low and high( 145 ohms) when the fuel level is high. The pointer of the magnetic gauge remains in position when the ignition is turned to the Off position. On some models, an anti-slosh module is used to dampen out fluctuating fuel signals from the sender. Some vehicles are equipped with a low fuel warning indicator. The anti-slosh module will also actuate the low fuel indicator when the fuel level in the tank reaches 1/16 to 1/8 full.

Do your other gauges/warning indicators work properly with the ignition on? If not, check for power at the fuse panel/fuses.

If they do then partially remove your cluster with connector still installed and check for voltage at cluster connector and gauge. Check continuity of cluster and gauge for ground.

Sometimes the anti-slosh module (if installed) goes bad in the Grand Marquis but not likely.

Sender troubleshooting:
  1. Perform test with resistors as follows:
    1. Disconnect wiring connector at sender unit, then connect resistor between gauge lead and a suitable ground.
    2. Turn ignition switch to On position.
    3. With 145 ohm resistor, the gauge pointer should contact the Full mark.
    4. With 22 ohm resistor, the gauge pointer should contact the Empty mark.
  1. Perform test with fuel sender of known quality as follows:
    1. Turn ignition to Off position.
    2. Disconnect wiring connector from sender and connect it to test sender.
    3. Move float rod away from fuel filter against Full stop position. Wait approximately 30 seconds, then turn ignition switch to On position. The gauge should read on or above the Full mark.
    4. Move float rod toward fuel filter against Empty stop position. Turn ignition switch to Off position. Wait approximately 30 seconds, then turn ignition switch to On position. The gauge should read on or below the Empty mark. If gauge works properly replace sender, which involves dropping fuel tank.

Fuel gage not reading

check for power to the sender unit first ,then go from their by earthing the wire on the sender unit and seeing if the gauge moves to full if it does then its its a faulty sender unit if it doesnt move then its a faulty gauge

Fuel guage reads on quarter full when tank is full. Im thinking sender unit but wanted to check first.

best way to test is to jack up the car support the rear with jack stands and wheel chock the tires so it doesnt roll, locate the wires to the fuel tank sender and unplug , gauge should go way past full unplugged revealing the gauge should be ok, ground the same gauge wire and the gauge should read past empty, this will test not only the gauges credibility but also the integrity of the wires and ground in the system.
If the gauge checks out good which 90% of the time they do, you must drain the fuel tank disconnect the fuel filler tube, and all fuel lines and electric connectors, unthread the fuel sender cover and remove the fuel tank sender and fuel pump assembly from the tank, seperate the two carefully in order to replace the fuel sender assembly, be careful not to bend the fuel float arm when assembling back into the tank, it is only a tiny rheostat that is controlled by the upward/downward motion of the float arm and can easily ruin the rheostat windings if the arm is forced too hard during installation.
Happy motoring!!

Fuel gauge doesnt read properly

this problem is caused by a defective fuel level sending unit, the sending unit is located inside the fuel tank, u must drop the tank out of the car to replace it, it comes as a fuel tank module which includes the sender and a new fuel pump.

Not working

take the wire off the fuel sender and ground it, the fuel gauge should read full. if it does, the sender or the float on the sender is bad. if it does not read full, there is a bad wire or connection between the fuel tank and gauge. if you take the sender out, and the float is bad, these are easily available, you can hook up the wire and another wire to ground the body of the sender and you should be able to work the arm up and down and the gauge should read.

2000 Buick Century gas gauge reads full all the time

You're either looking at a short in the wire that goes to the fuel sender, or a bad fuel sender. If it was just a broken wire, it would read empty instead. The fuel sender is a permanent part of the fuel pump, so that has to be replaced as a unit.

Pajero NK87 petrol guage not working, shows empty even when tank is full

Sounds like the Fuel sender unit in the fuel tank needs replacing however you may want to check that the electrical plugs are contacting properly,Check that the gauge is working by putting a piece of wire from the sender unit wire to the chassis,at the fuel tank sender unit plug,Turn ignition on while watching gauge if it moves toward fill turn ignition off and remove wire to chassis. If gauge moves it means from the fuel tank to fuel gauge is intact and not your problem.
