Question about 1993 Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

Our starter went on our 1993 Pontiac Trans Am the other day. We have since replaced it and the car still won't fully turn over. We also had to replace the plugs, it is getting fuel, is sparking, battery is new... What else could it be?

Hi there, to start with did you have problems starting before the starter has been replaced, things like, dragging, not turning over normally and have you done a compression test on it,(just to prove the rings is Ok) sounds more like bearings as the motor would not turn over and as of the result the starter will labour and fail as it have to work very hard to turn the motor over. take out all the plugs and try to turn the motor over with a spanner on the crankshaft nut. only turn clockwise as you could undo the nut and that will need re-torque if that happens, feel if the motor turns over easy, if not you might have some serious bearing problems, try this first and let me know. My 1993 Buick Park Avenue just Clicks once when you turn the key on starter won't engage the battery is fine

Sounds like a bad starter or a bad battery cable connection to me. If you are certain that tyour battery is in good condition and fully charged, your battery cables are clean and tight and are making good connection on BOTH ends, replace the starter.

Hello I have a problem with my Pontiac 2002 Trans Am - Collector Edition. It does not want any more to start, there is the indicator SECURTITY which east lights, and since average making it...

Check the battery voltage with a multimeter. If the battery can't deliver a full 12 volts, the starter solenoid won't even activate. It may be that a cell went dead, causing a direct short inside the battery. Replace the battery if your battery is older than 3 years, or take it to an auto parts store to have it tested. The security light on is an issue many people have when the battery is low and the car won't start.

It is also possible that the security chip on the ignition key is worn. If it isn't making contact properly, the computer won't 'read' the resistor, and won't start. You will need to replace the key to see if this fixes the problem.

I’m happy to help further over the phone at

My car wont start. Even after a jump. The lights flicker but other than that the car doesn't make a sound. Please help

see if power is going to starter, turn key to on to check. if yes then you have a starter problem. you can use a tester light to check the big cable from battery to starter. make sure battery connections are clean and tight. check all main fuses if need be. have a good day !!

1993 Pontiac Trans Sport will not start. Wiggle wires in engine, slide shifter back and forth, removed and reinserted key, let it sit for a while, and still will not turn over the engine. Nothing. I did...

Check the battery connections--especially the positive terminal. Use a special wire brush tool from an auto parts store (cheap) to clean the posts and terminal interiors. Check the cable going into the terminal for corrosion as well--it may have damaged the interior wire. If no help, use a test light or meter to check for power at the starter solenoid. When the key is turned, you should hear a fairly loud 'click' from the solenoid. If it clicks, test for power at the starter terminal--when it clicks, power should appear at the starter. If so, the starter motor is defective and should be replaced. If no power, then the solenoid is defective. If no click at all, check the neutral safety switch for the automatic transmission or maybe the key switch itself. Hope this helps!
