Hello and thanks for reading, I have a 92 Metro, 4 Door, 3 Cylinder, Automatic. The transmission does not want to engage in drive unless I give it a little gas. It does the same thing in reverse sometimes too. Back in the 60,s, if you had this problem, it was most likely a bad modulator valve. I cant seem to find one on this car. Any ideas?
Is the idle set too low? Tranny pump may need replacement. I have this same car and am having a different tranny problem: mine downshifts at random. It does not slip; it just downshifts and then back up again and down and up and down and up. Sometimes it will work fine, but other times I look like a 16-year-old girl driving a stick. Any suggestions out there? I have not found a vacuum modulator either. It is just the throttle cable?

I don't think GM used vacuum modulators on any cars that late, the connection there is through the throttle valve cable. Can't see that causing this kind of problem, though, so it's probably safe to say it's an internal transmission problem. This would be Gary's cue to come and say what exactly it might be :-)
