Question about 2000 Hyundai Elantra

1 Answer

I don't exactly know when to turn the overdrive on or off. The owner's manual says to keep in on for normal driving but others across the Net say to only have it on when driving on the interstate or flat surfaces. They advise turn overdrive off when driving in hilly areas. What do you suggest? When should I turn overdrive on or off?

For a Ford 2006 expedition Xlt do I drive with overdrive on or off. I'm not pulling anything and this is my first t suv

Your owners manual should explain how overdrive works.
Under normal conditions, you drive in overdrive all the time. The transmission computer decides if overdrive is necessary or not.
The only time you drive with overdrive off is when you are descending a steep hill or pulling a load.

1999 mitsubishi eclipse automatic transmission wont shift into 4th gear.

First off.. If you have a check engine light on, Find someone with an OBD2 READER or buy one yourself(very good tool to have) and that will give you the code(s) to your problem..

If not.. Check ALL your fuses..

If those are good and you DO NOT have a sealed tranny.. Check your fluid..

If all the above check out good.. It's gonna be 1 of 2 things..

1. Your overdrive is either turned off and/or damaged.. (Over drive on: uses all 4 gears/Over drive off: uses only 3 gears)

2. Your shift silonoid pack is damaged, which normally when this happens your car goes into a thing called "dummy mode" and keeps the tranny ONLY in 2nd gear..

Now assuming your car shifts into every other gear just fine.. And the fact that normally reverse is the first gear to go out.. I'm gonna say it's your overdrive or a relay that runs with your overdrive..

Let me know what happens or if you have anymore questions..

How do I use the overdrive button in a Kia Sorento 2004 model?

I would forget about it

That is in your owners manual

I have a 2014 Nissan Frontier & that button turns off
5th gear (overdrive)

I use it on long hills at no more than 35 to 40 mph ,so it
doesn't keep shifting & keeps the rpm down,BUT I keep
my vehicles 18 years & used to own a trans shop,so I'm
in it for the long haul

It also keep the heat down in the fluid & saves clutch wear

Don't know how yours works & for everyone but me,forget it
& light on the gas, forget the tailgaters & drive slow, let them wait

1997 Dynasty 3.0 V6.

It sounds like it is not going into overdrive. You need to have your transmission control computer scanned for possible fault codes. Either that or you have the overdrive turned off. (Check your Owner's Manual)

How to turn on my o/d

Keeping overdrive on just means that when you reach cruising speed, the engine then goes into fewer rpms, saving gasoline. If you don't do a lot of highway driving, it doesn't make any difference. If you do, then you'd want to turn it on when you're on a trip etc. it should tell in your owners manual. if not call auto-zone they should be able to tell you. or the dealer ! good-day !

Do all 1991 240 automatic Volvos have Overdrive and what is overdrive used for?

All the ones I have come across have it. Basically it allows gearbox and engine to sync for greater fuel economy when you are not 'town driving' I.e doing more than 25 MPH. I've always left my overdrive engaged as you usually get better fuel economy. To try, take it onto a long open road, engage overdrive and bring her up to speed. Then turn off overdrive and watch your fuel gauge. You can pretty much see it drop.

How can i use the O/D

There is an O/D button on the dash or on the shift lever. The "O/D" stand for overdrive the vehicle is normally in the overdrive mode unless you turn it "off" with the O/D button. The only times that you should have to turn it off is. Towing or hauling a heavy load or mountain driving to have better power for pulling the steep grades and to have engine braking affect coming down the mountain. If you driving in the mountains remember to use your engine to hold your speed down, not brakes you'll burn the brakes up in no time. Read the owners manual for mountain driving. Keep in mind everytime you turn the vehicle off and restart it, it's going to go back to the O/D mode.

1989 ford ranger- "D" vs overdrive

Overdrive is designed for highway use, to lower the engine's rpm's and conserve fuel. It will not hurt your vehicle to drive it in drive in the city.
