Question about 1987 Cadillac Fleetwood

Low milage 28,000 mi. Has noisy speedometer cable within dash housing. Very annoying. replacement or possible repair. How involved is the repair if done yourself.

Try some thin oil to lube the cable. Wd40 lubs but then dries so thin oil is better.

Odometer not working


If the speedometer is still working, but the odometer does not, most likely the cable is broken (separate drives for odometer and speedometer within a single cable) or the dash unit needs replacing...

Replace speedometer cable


The mechanical cable and housing should be replaced together. The one end down at the transmission is held on by a large nut surrounding the cable housing, the housing is about 3/8 inch diameter and should be visible on the transaxle from above

The other end may require you to extract the dsah cluster from the dash if you do not have a clear view from below of the back side of the speedometer where the speedo cable housing will be clipped into place usually with a large white plastic clip that secures it to the back of the dash cluster. Use care when working in front of the steering wheel as the air bag can kill. It is best practice to remove one of the battery terminals and let it sit for a few minutes if you need to extract the dash cluster. It will come out easier if the column tilt is adjusted down.

It is as simple as getting both ends loose and then feeding the cable up through the floor pan or down depending on how easy the foam seal is to remove and which direction, and then extracting the cable housing and cable. Installation is just the reverse procedure of installation.

If you replace just the cable, you may have a speedo that bounces at any speed less than 50 MPH.

Is this a chevy truck? Possibly a 2003? Gm is having SERIOUS issues with these speedometer clusters. The whole cluster is bad and would need to be replaced. I do not recommend getting a used one as the odometer stays with the cluster. ( if donor truck had 150,000 miles and yours had 50,000.... once you swap out the cluster yours would read 150,000. A dealer can order them preset.) Clusters are running about $300.00 from the local gm dealer and most will require their service dept. To repair as it would involve keeping accurate milage on the vehicle for various purposes.

Speedometer bounces around on my 1972 chevrolet pickup and makes a noise within the cable where it connects on the cluster..


There is a cable inside the sheath of you speedometer cable that looks like a long tightly wound spring. It may be about to fail. You can remove it and get a new one. If it can not all be removed from the top - you will have to undo the cable at the transmission to remove it. Be sure you get all of it out. When you reinstall the new cable be sure and lube it well. I use motorcycle chain oil - it is water proof and lasts a long time. Let me know if this helps. Thanks. (nice a '72 hope it is realy good shape)

Speedometer quit working


Speedometer cables connect to the transmission. Trace the speedometer cable from the transmission to the dash. Disconnect the cable from the transmission and pull the cable out. Compare the length of the cable to the cable housing. If it is damaged or broken, replace the cable

I have a 92 Seville and the problem is with the Dash section of the car. The speedometer and Tach work along with all the high beem turn signals restraint lights, but the Milage does not display, nor does...


The backlight bulbs are burnt out. Common on this model. Unfortunately, it is NOT an easy fix. You'll need to pull the dash cluster and replace the bulbs. It involves de-soldering the old bulbs and replacing with new. I have done this but it is very time consuming and you MIGHT damage the circuit board if you are not adept at micro-soldering. IF you do this, replace ALL the bulbs as others will slowly burn out. Replacement bulbs are NOT available thru GM. You'll need to go to a place like MCM Electronics or Top Bulb to get the correct one....There are businesses on-line that specialize in dash repair. GOOGLE to find them.. They ususally charge $100 for this service.

Speedometer needle wildly fluctuates at all speeds, speedometer cable checks fine


take the cable out of its housing and grease it, take it all the way out and grease it as you put it back in, that should fix it. if not the speedometer head may be bad, but when they go bad usually its noisy behind the speedometer.

Ihave a 91 300zx and my speedometer doesn't work.


The most likely problem is the speedometer cable is broken, probably near the transmission. if it's the cable, probably under $10. Disconnect the housing at the transmission, and the cable is inside. Pull the cable out, it should be square at both ends. a broken cable is obvious. insert a good cable (with some appropriate cable lube) into the flexable cable housing, you might have to turn the cable a bit to get the end back in the speedometer. If it is broke , you will also have to disconnect the housing at the speedometer to get the other end out. You might be able to reach it from under the dash, but you might have to loosen the instrument cluster to reach it.

Speedometer and odometer stopped working


This sounds like it could possibly be a short under the dash. I would check all the wiring harnesses under the dash. Have you reset the main computer to see if this will solve a code issue? I was told that the computer can cause communication problems. You remove the neutral cable from the battery first then the hot side. Leave off for a few minutes and then replace the battery cables. Good luck, I have done a lot to my own ranger as well.

Noisy speedometer


The click you are hearing might be a dry speedometer cable. Applying grease to the inner cable will most likely help this problem. The problem is getting to the cable behind the speedometer/dash panel. You can also get to the cable from under the truck. if you crawl under the truck and look at the smaller end of the transmission, you will see the cable screwed into the tail piece of the transmission. Remove the cable from the transmission and pull the inner cable out of the outer cable. The inner cable is what spins and causes the speedometer to turn. Take regular wheel bearing grease in the palm of your hand and slid the inner cable through the grease then put the inner cable back in the outer cable. When the inner cable gets to the back of the speedometer, you will have to slowly turn the cable and give a slight pressure inward to seat the inner cable into the speedometer.
