Problem with Chevrolet 1986 Chevette

1986 Chevette hesitation and loss of power.

Hi , I have a 1986 chevrolet chevette that has alot of hesitation when you push on the gas pedal and aloss of power. I replaced all the vacumm hoses and have brought the car down to Midas Muffler for a free inspection to see if the Catalitic converter was plugged. They removed the tailpipe and it was fine I changed out also the PCV Valve and Air filter. Also NO error codes comming up on the car Computer. The car idles fine no misses etc...Theres alot of smog equipment on this vehicle. What do you all think I should check next. Much help from you all would be appreciated. Brian Las Vegas , Nevada

    • Did you ever find out what the problem was? We are having the same problem with our 1986 Chevette! Could someone please respond and let us know what our next step would be? We have replaced just about all of the items that have been pointed out on this website.

How many miles on it? I bet it's the carbeutor...I got 3 Chevettes which
went through that orderal. Check for the lean condition on carb. When was
the last time you gave it a tune up? Check plugs, wires, ingition, timing
too.

...

I had the same problem.  It turned out that the ignition timing was over advanced.

Check in-line fuel filter. One going into carb.

Hmmm...could be one of, or a few things.

You would think with a car so simple you would have no trouble
determining the problem.

I am assuming you have the gasoline burning 1.6 litre engine.

You've changed the PCV valve and air filter, good. That's the first
place to usually look. The gasoline filter that leads into the
carburetor is the next place you should check as already suggested.

The automatic chokes on these things tend to dry out and get stiff--I
would especially think so in your climate. It could also be the heater
plate (for smog purposes) between your carb and manifold has gone.

When does the car have no power, in the low RPM's when driving or
higher?

I assume this is a carbuerated engine. 150,000 miles or so? Almost bet it's the
acelerator pump in the carb. if so equipped. Those symptoms are classic.
