SOURCE: water pump

About 8, if you are methodical you should be ok. You will probably have to remove the cam belt. If you do you need a tool to hold the cams-the tool is basically a flat plate +/- 400 mm long and about 6mm thick which slots into the rear of the cams when engine is in the correct position and on tdc.

SOURCE: how to replace 1998 dodge ram van water pump

There is a special spanner wrench that you need to hold onto the water pump pulley (the 2 holes in the big pulley the belt rides on).
The tool has a Y shape to it with a handle coming off the bottom end of the Y. There will be 2 pins in the ends of the V that fit into the holes on the pulley (adjustable). You put the pins into the holes, grab the handle with the left hand, and put a 15 inch cresent wrench in the right hand onto the clutch nut. Pull up on the Y shaped tool handle with the pins, push down on the wrench to the left (counter clockwise) to un-screw the clutch from the pulley.
Then take the clutch off the fan after you have it out of the truck.
LEAVE THE BELT ON UNTIL YOU GET THE PULLEY LOOSE!!!
THEN, take the belt off, then the pulley/clutch asembly off, then the water pump (replace with a NEW - NOT REBUILT PUMP).
The new only costs 20 bucks or so more, and it is worth the headache of paying more while you have it apart. If the clutch is shot, the pump is close behind because of the vibrations ruins the seals/bearings on the pump, even though you cant hear the noise, it is there. Take the LOWER fan shroud completely off by removing the trans lines from the radiator. pull the fan out the BOTTOM of the Van. Leave the top shroud in place but take the screws out so you can manuever the lower shroud out. You also may have to remove the lower radiator hose and move it aside. Good time to change coolant anyway. And since you are in there on top, change the thermostat, while you are doing the cooling system service. Use a PREAMIUM BRAND thermostat, like a STANT, it will have a small vent hole with a valve in it hanging off the side edge of the thermostat that helps vent air from the system so it will not overheat. Trapped air can cause the cooling system to overheat, so dont put the thermostat in upside down! Point go's UP.
GOOD LUCK.

  3. Loosen the water pump bolts and release tension with tool J–33039 or equivalent.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  6. Carefully lower the vehicle, then remove the timing belt. Fig. 11: Exploded view of the timing belt assembly — 1989–92 OHC engines 87953118.gif
    To install:
  7. Turn the crankshaft and the camshaft gears clockwise to align the timing marks on the gears with the timing marks on the rear cover.
  8. Install the timing belt, making sure the portion between the camshaft gear and crankcase gear is in tension.
  9. Using tool J–33039 or equivalent, turn the water pump eccentric clockwise until the tensioner contacts the high torque stop. Tighten the water pump screws slightly.
  10. Turn the engine by the crankshaft gear bolt 720°to fully seat the belt into the gear teeth.
  11. Turn the water pump eccentric counterclockwise until the hole in the tensioner arm is aligned with the hole in the base.
  12. Tighten the water pump screws to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm), while checking that the tensioner holes remain as adjusted in the prior step.
  13. Install the crankshaft pulley, timing belt cover and the serpentine drive belt.
1993–94 VEHICLES
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable, then partially drain and recover the cooling system.
  2. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir.
  3. If equipped, remove the A/C belt.
  4. Remove the serpentine belt.
  5. Disconnect the evaporative emission pipe assembly.
  6. Remove the crankshaft pulley assembly.
  7. As outlined earlier, remove the timing belt front cover.
  8. Align the marks on the crankshaft sprocket with the marks on the rear timing belt cover by rotating the crankshaft.
  9. Loosen the water pump retaining bolts, and release the tension with tool J 33039-A or equivalent.
  10. Carefully lower the vehicle, then remove the timing belt. Fig. 12: Timing belt installation and tightening specifications — 1993–94 2.0L OHC engines 87953119.gif
    To install:
  11. Turn the crankshaft and camshaft gears clockwise to align the timing marks on the gears with the timing marks on the rear cover.
  12. Install the timing belt, making sure that the portion between the camshaft gear and crankshaft gear is in tension.
  13. Using tool J 33039-A, or equivalent adjustment tool, turn the coolant pump eccentric clockwise until the tensioner arm contacts the high torque stop. Tighten the water pump screws slightly.
  14. Turn the engine by the crankshaft gear bolt 720°clockwise to fully seat the belt into the gear teeth.
  15. Turn the coolant pump eccentric counter clockwise until the hole in the tensioner arm is aligned with the hole in the base. This must be done with the engine at room temperature, approximately 68°F (20°C).
  16. Tighten the water pump screws while checking that the tensioner holes remain as adjusted as in step 15.
  17. As outlined earlier, install the timing belt cover.
  18. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  19. Connect the evaporative emission pipe assembly.
  20. Install the serpentine drive belt and the A/C belt (if equipped).
  21. Install the coolant recovery reservoir.
  22. Properly fill the cooling system, then connect the negative battery cable.

1998 Explorer: how do i fix the timing belt...

Remove your radiator, water pump, and anything else blocking the front of the engine. remove the timing belt cover and there is the belt. The best advice I can give on exact specs is to purchase a Haynes manual. It will give exact specs on lining up timing marks, resetting the timing, and torque specs of all things involved

How to take the timing chain off to replace the water pump

The best way to do this yourself is to get a HAYNES or other auto manual. This is a complicated procedure and if not performed EXACTLY, timing can thrown off, not to mention the fact that engine damage can occur.
Usually it is just a matter of aligning the timing marks on each cam (double overhead cams) AS WELL AS the crankshaft (bottom pulley) all at the exact marks to make sure the timing is not disturbed. These manuals would be worth their weight in gold to get the exact procedure done correctly. The manuals are only about 20-30 bucks, and contain a boatload of other useful info also.

General outline:
1-Tear down engine sufficiently to access removing the timing belt cover.
2-Remove timing belt cover.
3-Turn engine over slowly and manually (by hand) until you have reached the ALIGNED points described by the MANUAL.
4-Remove the timing belt TENSION ADJUSTER, then the timing belt.(It is CRITICAL that the timing is not disturbed at this point, until the timing belt is installed.

*Do not reinstall the old timing belt, use a NEW one.*

5-You now have access to the water pump/mounting bolts.
6-Replace the water pump.
7-Reinsure the timing marks proper positions as you install the NEW timing belt, taking into account the slack that the tension adjuster you also will install will remove.
8-Recheck your timing mark alignments by turning the engine by hand back and foth some.
9-Reinstall the timing belt cover.
10-Reinstall all the components that you had to tear down to gain access for this job.

If you double checked your timing calculations, and your water pump replacement, everything should be good to go.

It's a little time consuming, you will need a harmonic balacer puller/reinstaller tool, and air tools will knock it out much quicker. Your back might be aching a lil by the time this job is complete.

Reply back if you need more info.

Hope this helps.
