Question about Volvo 780

Open Question

I have a 2005 volvo 670 with a cummins motor. when accelerating, and sometimes even when going down hill, there is a loud whining noise, sounds like its coming from the area of the turbo. changed the pulleys, put in brand new alternator. no luck. any ideas?

the belt tensioner is on the lower left of the engine there is a 1/2 drive square hole on the right hand side pulley arm to release the tension its a pain to get at but you can, sometimes it is easier from the bottom

I had the same problem on a 94 dodge with the cummins. It seems the crank sensor that reads from a notch on the harmonic balancer was the problem Without this sensor reading that the engine is running the alternator wont charge. Possibly the same problem with yours

Hey, maybe the engine is just too small for big hill's :) but u can try to chance air filter and fuel filter and overlook the spark plugs (when it's a petrol engine)

SOURCE: i have 05 volvo vnl 670, isx cummins 450/500.

I have a 2007 Volvo 670. The check vehicle ecu comes on. The fault code is MID 144 PID 191 FMI 5. THe truck won't go pass 1400 rpm, the speedometer doesn't work, the cruise doesn't work, the engine break doesn't work. I have to turn the truck off going down the road at highway speed for about 10 seconds and it'll go back to normal. Can anybody help?

remove the belt and start the engine ..IF THE NOISE disappear it might be idler bearings that driven by belt but if the noise still there check the pcv valve..

worn belt, or the cv axels. drive in a tight circle each direction and listen for for a clicking sound. if you hear one then your cv axels need to be replaced

Loud whine then knock in overdrive


well, without hearing the noise myself, i could guess that the torque converter clutch might be going bad. the torque converter is the part that transfers the power from the engine to the transmission via viscous fluid motion, the converter also has a clutch that internally provides a direct connection inside the converter for better fuel economy. but as with anything labeled as a clutch, it wears down to a point where is slips. the noise your hear could be the torque converter clutch slipping. i owned a 90 astro van with the same drivetrain that made a noise similar to what you speak of up hills. while driving up hills, fully depress the accelerator and if the clunking noise occurs, then the whine goes away as you accelerate faster in a lower gear, very likely this is the case. you would have to have a transmission shop diagnose further. i drove that old van for five more years cause i didn't want to pay to have transmission repaired. it can be very expensive.

My 2005 Honda odyssey with 96k miles whines when in drive and under load. When coasting the noise goes away. It is not there in neutral. The noise increases in pitch with speed


Sounds like differential or differential bearings as it happens under load,if it was just wheel bearings it would do it rolling down a hill even with the engine switched off, it needs to be driven by an experienced mechanic to diagnose the noise but thats probably it

Whining noise while accelerating in 1st gear


Check the idler and tensioner pullys for your serpentine belt. I suspect the whining noise heard earlier was due to the fact one was getting a bit stiff or rough turning. When you gave it that extra fuel, the sudden load may have finished it off. Sometimes they lock up, and sometimes they fall apart. Check those items first.

It is the bearing in the idler pully. about $35 and 30 minutes of work and its fixed.
