Help: 1986 Astro high idle

By Odud - usenet poster

Chevy experts:

1986 Chevrolet Astro, 4.3L, 4 speed automatic.

It idles really high, around 1100-1300 rpms, when cold. Sometimes it settles
down to 750 rpms after warm up. Sometimes not.

Background:

Basic idle is set at 650-700. All vacuum lines going to the intake manifold
have been checked. There are no air leaks. The check engine light is not lit.
There are no codes in the ECM. The throttle linkage is not binding.

The PROM in the ECM does predate the updated PROM identified in TSB 01/23/1987
Chevrolet 86-T-218, which corrects a cold high idle problem. However, the Astro
did not have a previous cold high problem.

The question:

Can a defective temperature sender cause the ECM to produce a high idle?

TIA

Bill

-   You can see my posting right before yours. I went and tried to buy a main engine computer temp sensor as directed by my auto mechanic who had destroyed my 1986 Astro van by removing main engine computer and repacing with a junkyard computer, etc. and other unknown insane things he did to my van to make it idle at 90 mph as i put it. i was sold a badically "thermostat" by the car part company that owns the repair shop that screwed me up. I am now seeking to find out how to get the right part and have been told it should fix the idle problem. I don't think so, however, I think it is the defective main computer he replaced for no known reason. That proves an idiot unlicensed mechanic is never the person to go to: I apid 800 dollars for this mess to a van not worth more than that total.-   Guest

-   Ihave a Chevy astro van 1986, 5 on floor clutch. A mechanic put a new ignition button on and bypassed something. Now it idles extremely fast when warmed up, very slow when cold. He claims this problem is caused by the heat sensor computer part. However, prior to him bypassing something i the ignition, it did not idle too fast. Two questions: is it dangerous to idel so fast,,,,the fast thing also starts doing it in first and second gear. ruined in Port Orford, Oregon -   juliasmmns

Yes, if the coolant or manifold air temperature sensor was reading colder
than it was, the idle speed could be too high.

The TSB you mentioned says that the updated PROM reduces the cold idle speed
to 1600 RPM (!), so under some conditions it probably is normal for it to
idle that high, but I'm guessing it isn't actually that cold out..

Bingo! It was a bad thermostat (rusted through, never saw that before) and a
bad sender. Idle is nice and stable now at around 800.

Thanks.
